Kardamone or Duolingo

You are learning a language with Duolingo and wonder what else Kardamone offers? Here is what you will find, what works differently, and what is not there.

You no longer have to choose between Anki’s spaced repetition and Duolingo’s guided learning.

What you will find

  • A path ready to follow: after a level test of about five minutes, or from the very start, Kardamone offers you the lessons in order.
  • A session every day, and your streak of days studied in a row.
  • Listening and speaking: you can type the word you hear, say it aloud or translate it out loud, if your browser recognises speech.
  • Reviews: the words you have already seen come back over the days.

What works differently

  • No leagues and no energy to lose. A session goes in steps of eight words, and you can stop after any of them.
  • The typed answer. You first pick the answer out of four, then type it with no help.
  • Grammar explained. Each point has its own page in the grammar guide, with its exercises right beside it.
  • The review schedule. Each card comes back the next day, then after 4, 12 and 35 days, and you can see at any time what is due for review.
  • Your own lists. Alongside the catalogue, you write your own lists, import them, or draw one from a document: a text, a PDF or a Word file.
  • Sharing with a class. A list, or a whole collection, is shared with a single link, and each student studies with their own account.
  • Dialogues. At the start of the path, you learn the lines of a dialogue one by one, then listen to it whole.
  • Texts. You read texts written with the words of your level, and fill in their gaps.
  • "Sentences". In this exercise, you understand, hear, say and then write whole sentences made of the words you have learnt.
  • The grammar guide. You can also read it outside the path, without an account, point by point and level by level.

What you will not find

  • Conversations with an artificial intelligence.
  • Leaderboards, gems and rewards.
  • An app to download from a store: Kardamone opens in the browser and can be added to the home screen.
