Separable verbs
Separable verbs in the present: the prefix stands at the end of the clause (ich stehe auf, wir kaufen heute ein), the vowel changes as in the simple verb (er fängt an, du nimmst mit), and the word order in questions, with nicht and after a modal verb (Kommst du mit? Ich will einkaufen).
In a main clause, only the stem of a separable verb is conjugated, with the usual present endings, and it stands in second position. The prefix is placed at the end of the clause, after the object and the time words: Ich stehe auf, du rufst an, er kauft ein, wir rufen Lukas an, sie kommen mit. When a time word such as heute comes first, the verb is still second and the prefix still last: Heute steht sie spät auf.
| Infinitive | Main clause |
|---|---|
| aufstehen | ich stehe auf, er steht auf |
| anrufen | du rufst an, sie ruft an, wir rufen an |
| einkaufen | er kauft ein, wir kaufen ein |
| mitkommen | er kommt mit, sie kommen mit |
The English speaker's trap: the prefix is not left on the verb. Ich aufstehe and ich anrufe dich are wrong: Ich stehe auf, Ich rufe dich an.

A separable verb is conjugated like the simple verb inside it, so a verb with a vowel change keeps that change with du and er, sie, es: anfangen gives du fängst an, er fängt an; abfahren gives er fährt ab; einladen gives du lädst ein, sie lädt ein; ansehen gives du siehst an, er sieht an; mitnehmen gives du nimmst mit, sie nimmt mit. The other persons keep the vowel of the infinitive: ich lade ein, ihr fahrt ab, wir nehmen mit.
Example: Der Kurs fängt morgen an und Ben nimmt sein Buch mit.
The trap: forms such as er fangt an or er nehmt mit are wrong. The vowel change stays in the separable verb: er fängt an, er nimmt mit.

In a yes/no question, the conjugated stem comes first and the prefix stays at the end: Kommst du mit?, Siehst du das an?. After a question word, the stem is second: Wer kauft ein?, Was nehmt ihr morgen mit?.
nicht is placed just before the prefix at the end: Er ruft mich nicht an, Sie kommt morgen nicht mit, Der Film fängt heute nicht an.
After a modal verb, the separable verb is not split: it stands whole, as an infinitive, at the end of the clause. Ich will morgen einkaufen, Kannst du mich anrufen?, Er will nicht aufstehen, Sie möchte mitkommen. The modal verb has its usual forms: ich will, er will, du kannst, sie kann, ihr könnt.
The English speaker's trap: after want to or can, the verb is not split as in a simple sentence. Wir wollen morgen kaufen ein is wrong: Wir wollen morgen einkaufen.
