The night is the exception: in der Nacht.
| Clock time | Day, part of the day | Month, season |

um zehn Uhr | am Freitag, am Morgen | im Mai, im Sommer |
The English prepositions do not match the German ones: « at the weekend » is am Wochenende, « at night » is in der Nacht, and « in July » is im Juli, never in Juli. A year stands alone or after im Jahr: 2026 or im Jahr 2026, not in 2026.

After der, the ordinal ends in -e: Morgen ist der erste April. After am, it ends in -en: am ersten Mai, am dritten März, am vierten Juni, am zwölften Juni. In writing, the ordinal is a figure followed by a full stop: am 12. Juni is read am zwölften Juni.

zuerst (first), dann (then, next) and später (later) put actions in order. When one of them stands at the beginning of the sentence, the conjugated verb comes in second position and the subject follows it: Zuerst trinkt Lena einen Tee., Dann liest sie., Später kauft sie ein. After a period of time, später means « later »: zwei Stunden später.
The trap for an English speaker: in English the subject stays before the verb (« then we go »), whereas in German the verb is placed directly after the time word: dann gehen wir, never dann wir gehen. The time word may also stand after the verb: Wir gehen dann.
Examples: Zuerst lerne ich, dann spiele ich. Später gehen wir einkaufen.
