6. Active or passive, and man

The active is used when the one who does the action is the subject: Mein Vater wäscht den Hund. The passive is used when the person or thing the action happens to is the subject: Der Hund wird gewaschen, in a subordinate clause dass der Hund gewaschen wird. In the passive, that subject is in the nominative (Er wird repariert). In the active, it stays the accusative object (Man repariert ihn).

man with an active verb is a common alternative to the passive, especially in speech. man takes the verb in the third person singular, like er: man trinkt, man bezahlt, man spricht, and with a modal verb man darf, man kann.

  • Hier repariert man Schuhe. = Hier werden Schuhe repariert.
  • Hier werden Zeitungen verkauft. = Man verkauft hier Zeitungen.
