Word order and negation: the middle field and negating a part
The order of the middle field, with what is known placed first and what is new last (Gestern hat mich jemand angerufen), negating a whole sentence or only one part of it (nicht alle, nicht heute, sondern morgen), and negating with un-, miss-, -los and -frei (unzufrieden, missverstanden, arbeitslos, alkoholfrei).
Information that is already known (a pronoun, a noun with the definite article) is placed near the start of the middle field; new information (a noun with the indefinite article, jemand) is placed near its end, just before the infinitive or participle.
- An unstressed pronoun is placed straight after the conjugated verb, even before a noun subject:
hat ihr ein Kollege geschrieben, hat dich jemand gesucht, hat mich jemand gefragt. - A known object is placed as a pronoun before the new person or the time:
Ich habe es einem Freund empfohlen, ich habe ihn einer Kollegin gegeben, ich habe sie gestern abgeschickt. - What is new takes the indefinite article and stands late:
Ich habe ihr eine Uhr gekauft,Wir haben ihm einen Kuchen gebacken,Heute hat uns ein Kollege aus Wien besucht. - What links to the previous sentence is often placed in first position:
das, denordortpointing back. An unstressedescannot stand there as an object:Ich habe ein neues Handy. Das habe ich im Internet bestellt.
Im Café hat uns eine alte Freundin von Lena erkannt.
In English the subject is placed before the verb and the object (a neighbour helped me); in German the unstressed pronoun is placed first, straight after the verb: hat mir ein Nachbar geholfen.

When the whole sentence is negated, nicht is placed as late as possible, after the objects and the time: Ich kenne sie nicht. When only one part is negated, nicht stands straight before that part, even in first position, and the right part follows with sondern (not aber): nicht im Juni, sondern im Mai, Nicht Lena hat angerufen, sondern ihre Mutter. Before a noun with ein or no article, the negative is kein, also in this case: kein Auto, sondern ein Fahrrad. When the second part adds something and replaces nothing, but is aber: Das Zimmer ist nicht modern, aber es ist sauber.
The place of nicht changes the meaning: Er ist nicht immer müde (not always), Sie hat es nicht absichtlich gesagt (not on purpose), Nicht alle Kinder schlafen schon (only some).
In English, all the children didn't sleep is often said for not all; in German the meaning not all is given by nicht placed straight before alle.

| Part | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| un- + adjective | the opposite | unhöflich, unzufrieden, ungeduldig, unglücklich |
| miss- + verb | wrongly, badly | missverstehen: hat missverstanden |
| noun + -los | lacking something | arbeitslos, erfolglos, hoffnungslos |
| noun + -frei | free of something unwanted | alkoholfrei, rauchfrei, zollfrei |
un- is usually stressed. miss- is never separated from the verb, and the participle takes no ge-: missverstanden. A linking -s- often joins the noun and the suffix: arbeitslos, hoffnungslos. Before a noun, the new adjective takes the usual endings: alkoholfreies Bier, alkoholfreie Getränke, ein erfolgloser Versuch.
In English the negative prefix may be un-, in-, im-, il- or dis- (impatient, dissatisfied); in German it is almost always un-: ungeduldig, unzufrieden.
