1. Unreal conditions in the past, and mixed times

An unreal condition in the past is expressed with the past Konjunktiv II in both clauses: hätte or wäre and the Partizip II. The auxiliary is the one the verb takes in the Perfekt: ich wäre gewesen, sie hätten gehabt, du wärst mitgekommen (also wärest), wir wären geblieben. In the wenn-clause the auxiliary is placed last, whether the clause comes first or second: Wir wären gekommen, wenn ihr uns eingeladen hättet.

The two clauses can refer to two different times. A past condition with a result in the present is followed by the present Konjunktiv II in the main clause: Wenn wir den Schlüssel nicht vergessen hätten, wären wir jetzt zu Hause. A lasting state or ability with a past result is expressed with the present Konjunktiv II in the wenn-clause: Wenn ich besser Englisch könnte, hätte ich den Brief selbst geschrieben.

now: wäre, könnte, hättepast: hätten gesehen, wäre gekommen

English uses had for every verb (if she had gone), but the verbs whose Perfekt is formed with sein have wäre in the past Konjunktiv II: wenn sie gefahren wäre, never gefahren hätte.

2. Should have, could have: hätte machen sollen

Should have done and could have done are expressed with the Konjunktiv II of haben and two infinitives at the end of the clause, the full verb first and the modal verb last: du hättest warten sollen, wir hätten gehen sollen, er hätte bleiben können, sie hätten anfangen können, sie hätte kommen dürfen, ihr hättet zahlen müssen. The modal verb is an infinitive, not a participle (gesollt, gekonnt), and the auxiliary is always hätte.

In a subordinate clause, hätte is placed before the two infinitives, not at the end: Er glaubt, dass er früher hätte gehen sollen.

In English the full verb is a participle (should have told); in German it is an infinitive: Sie hätten es uns sagen sollen, never gesagt sollen.

3. Modal verbs in the Perfekt: hat arbeiten müssen

The Perfekt of a modal verb with another verb is formed with haben and two infinitives, the modal verb last (the double infinitive): ich habe warten müssen, er hat kommen dürfen, sie hat helfen können, wir haben zahlen müssen, habt ihr bleiben dürfen?. The auxiliary is always haben, even when the Perfekt of the full verb is formed with sein: wir haben gehen müssen. With no other verb, the participle of the modal verb is used: Das hat er so gewollt, Sie hat es gemusst.

In a subordinate clause, hat is placed before the two infinitives: …, weil sie hat zahlen müssen, …, ob er hat kommen dürfen. In speech and writing, the Präteritum (ich musste arbeiten) is often preferred.

English had to and couldn't look like simple past forms; in the German Perfekt, the infinitive of the modal verb is placed at the end: Ich habe lange warten müssen, never gemusst warten.

4. As if: als ob, als wenn, als + verb

An unreal comparison (as if) is expressed with als ob or als wenn and the Konjunktiv II at the end of the clause: als ob er reich wäre, als wenn sie die Antwort wüsste, als ob es gleich schneien würde. With als alone, the conjugated verb follows als directly: als wäre er der Chef, als hätte sie nichts gehört, als würde sie schlafen. For an earlier time, hätte or wäre and the participle are used: als ob du nichts gegessen hättest, als wäre er gerade angekommen. Written German also uses the Konjunktiv I here (als ob er reich sei).

These clauses often follow so tun (to pretend), aussehen and klingen: Das klingt, als wäre es ganz einfach.

English often uses the indicative (as if he was rich, as if you haven't eaten), but German uses the Konjunktiv II: als ob du nichts gegessen hättest, not hast.

5. Verbs with an infinitive: sehen, hören, lassen

sehen, hören, lassen and bleiben are followed by an infinitive without zu, placed at the end of the clause: Hörst du es klopfen?, Ich sehe meinen Bruder im Garten spielen, Wir blieben vor dem Fenster stehen. English uses an -ing form or a participle (I can hear it knocking, I had it repaired); in German the verb is an infinitive.

The Perfekt of lassen, sehen and hören is formed with haben, and after another infinitive the verb is itself an infinitive: sie hat das Auto waschen lassen, wir haben ihn kommen sehen, er hat sie singen hören. Before lassen, the full verb is an infinitive too: waschen lassen, schneiden lassen, never geschnitten lassen. The participles gesehen, gehört and, more rarely, gelassen also occur after an infinitive (wir haben ihn kommen gesehen). The Perfekt of bleiben is formed with sein and the participle: Meine Uhr ist stehen geblieben.

6. The unreal past and verbs with an infinitive: mixed practice

Unreal conditions in the past and across two times (hätte, hätten), should have and could have (hättest and two infinitives, sollen last), the Perfekt of the modal verbs (haben, müssen at the end), comparisons with als ob and als (wären, hätte), and lassen and bleiben with an infinitive (lassen, geblieben) are mixed, so that each sentence needs its own form.
