1. Neurčitý člen: a, an

Věc se pojmenuje vazbou It is, za kterou následuje neurčitý člen a nebo an a počitatelné podstatné jméno v jednotném čísle: It is a pen. Volba členu se řídí hláskou, ne písmenem: a se používá před souhláskou (a pen, a big car), an před samohláskou (an apple, an old hat). Když před podstatným jménem stojí přídavné jméno, počítá se první hláska přídavného jména: a new hat, ale an old hat.

Čeština členy nemá, v angličtině však počitatelné podstatné jméno v jednotném čísle bez členu obvykle nestojí: „To je jablko.“ se řekne It is an apple., ne It is apple. Neurčitý člen se klade i před název povolání, i když česky stojí podstatné jméno samo: „Je řidič.“ se řekne He is a driver.

2. Určitý člen: the

Neurčitý člen a, před samohláskou an, se používá, když se o věci mluví poprvé: Tom is in a shop. It is an egg. Určitý člen the se klade před věc, kterou mluvčí i posluchač už znají: The shop is open. Používá se také před věcí, která je jediná (the world), a před podstatným jménem, za kterým následuje určení s of (the name of the shop).

the má před souhláskou i před samohláskou stejný tvar, před samohláskou se však vyslovuje trochu jinak (the apple). Českému „obchod“ odpovídá a shop, nebo the shop podle toho, zda je věc už známá. Tam, kde by čeština mohla říct „ten obchod“, stojí v angličtině obvykle the: „Ten obchod je otevřený.“ se řekne The shop is open.

V množném čísle se a ani an nepoužívá. Anglické přídavné jméno stojí před podstatným jménem a v množném čísle se nemění, kdežto české se skloňuje: a red hat → two red hats („dva červené klobouky“).

a manmen
a womanwomen
a childchildren
a footfeet
a toothteeth
a personpeople
a fishfish

fish má v množném čísle stejný tvar: two fish. people je množné číslo od person a pojí se se slovesem v množném čísle: People are nice here. Českému „lidé“ odpovídá people, ne peoples, které znamená „národy“. K nepravidelným tvarům se -s nepřidává: children, ne childs.

5. Blízko, nebo daleko: this, that, here, there

this ukazuje na to, co je blízko mluvčího, that na to, co je dál: This is my coat. That is my hat. S podstatným jménem stojí přímo před ním: this coat, that hat. here znamená „tady“, there „tam“.

Českému „tento, tenhle“ odpovídá this a českému „tamten“ that. České „ten“ se používá pro blízké i vzdálené věci, anglicky se mezi this a that volí podle vzdálenosti. Pro zdůraznění se za podstatné jméno může přidat here nebo there: here se používá s this, there s that (this coat here, that hat there). Při představování se říká this is: Eva, this is my friend Ben.
