Kysymykset
Tarkat kysymykset englanniksi: kysymyssanalla alkava kysymys imperfektissä (Where did you go?), kysymyssana subjektina tai objektina (Who saw you? Who did you see?), Whose…? Which…? How far…?, prepositio kysymyksen lopussa (Who are you talking to?) ja lyhyet vastaukset (Yes, I did).
Imperfektissä kysymys muodostetaan kysymyssanalla, apuverbillä did, subjektilla ja verbin perusmuodolla: When did you leave? Verbi on perusmuodossa, koska mennyt aika näkyy jo apuverbistä did. be-verbin kysymys muodostetaan ilman apuverbiä did: was tai were tulee subjektin eteen.
| Tavallinen verbi | be-verbi |
|---|---|
When did you leave? | Where was Tom? |
What did you read? | How was your holiday? |
Why did the shop close early? What did you watch last night?
Huomaa: suomen kysymyksessä ei ole apuverbiä, mutta englannissa did on pakollinen: Where you went? ja Where did you went? ovat virheellisiä, oikea muoto on Where did you go? ”Millainen … oli?” kysytään muodossa How was…?

Kun who tai what on lauseen objekti, kysymys muodostetaan apuverbillä did (tai do, does), subjektilla ja verbin perusmuodolla: Who did you help? Kun who tai what on lauseen subjekti, apuverbiä ei käytetä: verbi tulee heti kysymyssanan jälkeen, imperfektissä tai preesensissä yksikön 3. persoonan s-päätteen kanssa.
| Objekti (did) | Subjekti (ei did) |
|---|---|
Who did you help? | Who helped you? |
What did she say? | What happened at school? |
Who saw the film?Who took the photos?Who lives in this flat?Who works with your father?
Huomaa: suomessa subjekti ja objekti erottuvat sijamuodosta: ”kuka” on subjekti, ”kenet” tai ”ketä” objekti. Kun suomen kysymys alkaa sanalla ”kuka” tai subjektina olevalla ”mikä”, englannissa ei käytetä apuverbiä did: ”Kuka auttoi sinua?” on Who helped you?, ei Who did help you? Myös partitiivissa oleva ”mitä” on subjekti tapahtumaa kysyttäessä: ”Mitä koulussa tapahtui?” on What happened at school?

Kysymys muodostetaan siten, että apuverbi tulee subjektin eteen. be-verbillä se on am, is tai are. Rakenteessa have got ja perfektissä (Present Perfect) se on have tai has. Kun have on yksin (omistaa, syödä ateria), käytetään apuverbiä do tai does.
| Rakenne | Esimerkki |
|---|---|
| be | Are the children tired? |
| have got | Has Tom got a cat? How many brothers have you got? |
| have + menneen ajan partisiippi | Have you read this book? Has the film started? |
| pelkkä have | Do you have a car? What time does Anna have lunch? |
Huomaa: suomen ”onko sinulla…?” sanotaan englanniksi Have you got…? tai Do you have…?, mutta rakenteita ei sekoiteta: Do you got…? on virheellinen.

Substantiivin edessä oleva whose kysyy omistajaa: Whose keys are these? Sitä ei pidä sekoittaa supistumaan who's, joka tarkoittaa who is. Substantiivin edessä olevaa sanaa which käytetään, kun valitaan tunnettujen vaihtoehtojen välillä: Which dress do you like? Sanalla how ja adjektiivilla tai adverbilla kysytään mittaa: how tall (ihmisen pituus), how far (etäisyys), how long (kesto), how often (kuinka usein).
How tall are you?How far is the station? How long is your holiday? How often do you go swimming?
Huomaa: ”kenen…?” on whose ja substantiivi, ei who. ”Kuinka kauan?” on How long…?, ei how much time. Ihmisestä ”kuinka pitkä?” on How tall…?, ei how long.

Suomessa kysymyssana saa sijapäätteen tai sen jälkeen tulee postpositio (”kenelle”, ”kenen kanssa”, ”mistä”). Englannissa prepositio tulee kysymyksen loppuun verbin ja sen objektin jälkeen: Who are you writing to? Kysymys alkaa pelkällä kysymyssanalla.
| Suomi | Englanti |
|---|---|
| kenelle kirjoitat? | Who are you writing to? |
| kenen kanssa asut? | Who do you live with? |
| mistä he puhuvat? | What are they talking about? |
Who is the letter from? What is this box for?Who is she shouting at?
Huomaa: joidenkin verbien kanssa englannissa on prepositio, vaikka suomessa sitä ei ole: ”kuunnella musiikkia” on listen to music, ”odottaa bussia” on wait for the bus, ”katsoa kuvaa” on look at the picture.

Lyhyessä vastauksessa toistetaan kysymyksen apuverbi ilman pääverbiä: Did they come? — Yes, they did. be-verbin kanssa toistetaan am, is, are, was tai were, rakenteessa have got ja perfektissä have tai has. Kieltävä vastaus muodostetaan sanalla not, tavallisesti supistumana: didn't, isn't, wasn't, haven't. Vastauksen subjekti on pronomini, ja sanan you tilalle tulee I: Were you tired? — Yes, I was.
| Kysymys | Lyhyt vastaus |
|---|---|
Do your parents work? | Yes, they do. |
Does Tom play tennis? | Yes, he does. |
Has Anna got a car? | Yes, she has. |
Was the shop open? | No, it wasn't. |
Huomaa: suomessa lyhyessä vastauksessa toistetaan verbi (”Pidätkö? – Pidän.”), mutta englannissa Yes, I like on virheellinen: lyhyessä vastauksessa toistetaan apuverbi.

Kysymystyypit vaihtelevat: imperfektin kysymykset apuverbillä did, who subjektina imperfektissä (wrote, called) tai objektina, kysymykset rakenteilla have ja does, whose, which, how far ja how long, prepositio kysymyksen lopussa (for, with) ja lyhyet vastaukset (did, didn't).
Kysymyksen muoto riippuu kysymyssanasta, apuverbistä ja preposition paikasta.
