Tulevaisuuden ilmaiseminen: suunnitelmat, sopimukset ja ennusteet
Tulevaisuus englanniksi: going to päätetylle suunnitelmalle ja näkyvään merkkiin perustuvalle ennusteelle (It’s going to rain), Present Continuous sovitulle menolle (I’m seeing the dentist), will puhehetken päätökselle ja lupaukselle (I’ll help you) ja Present Simple aikataululle (The train leaves at eight).
Rakennetta be + going to + verbin perusmuoto käytetään kahdessa tapauksessa: jo päätetystä suunnitelmasta (We are going to buy a new car.) ja ennusteesta, joka perustuu siihen, mitä nyt nähdään (Take an umbrella. It is going to rain this afternoon.). Verbin be muoto valitaan subjektin mukaan (I am, he is, you are), ja sanojen going to jälkeen tulee verbin perusmuoto: That glass is going to break. Kielteisessä lauseessa not tulee verbin be jälkeen (They aren't going to go out tonight, We aren't going to sell our flat), kysymyksessä be tulee subjektin eteen (When is Tom going to call?). Näkyvään merkkiin perustuvassa ennusteessa myös will on yleensä oikein, mutta going to on luontevampi.
Huomaa: suomessa suunnitelmasta puhutaan usein preesensillä (”Ensi vuonna myyn autoni.”), mutta englannin rakenteen kaikki kolme osaa ovat pakollisia: she is going to sell, ei she is go to sell eikä she going to sell.
Muita esimerkkejä: My sister is going to be a doctor. That child is going to cry. That old tree is going to fall.
Show the answer Look at those clouds! It ___ (rain). is going to rainShow the answer
Show the answer Tom has saved some money. He ___ (buy) a bike — he decided last month. is going to buyShow the answer
Present Continuous (kestopreesens: be + verbin ing-muoto) ilmaisee aikaa ilmaisevan sanan kanssa menon tai tapaamisen, joka on jo sovittu tai järjestetty: I am meeting Tom on Monday. Lucy is playing tennis after school tomorrow. Sitä käytetään, kun asia on järjestetty (lippu on ostettu, aika on sovittu), kun taas going to voi ilmaista myös pelkän aikomuksen. Sovitusta menosta voidaan yleensä sanoa myös going to.
| Verbi | ing-muoto |
|---|---|
see, meet, play, fly, go, visit | seeing, meeting, playing, flying, going, visiting |
come, drive, have, move | coming, driving, having, moving (loppu-e jätetään pois) |
Kielteisessä lauseessa not tulee verbin be jälkeen (I am not flying to Rome next week, They aren't having lunch with us tomorrow). Kysymyksessä be tulee subjektin eteen: Where are they going on Sunday?
Huomaa: suomessa sovittu meno ilmaistaan preesensillä (”Tapaan Pekan huomenna.”), mutta englannissa Present Continuous -muodolla: I am meeting Peter tomorrow, ei I meet Peter tomorrow. Verbin be jälkeen tulee ing-muoto: we are meeting, ei we are meet.
Show the answer Sorry, I can't come tonight. I ___ (meet) Anna at the cinema at six. am meetingShow the answer
Show the answer Tom ___ (play) tennis with Ben tomorrow at three. is playingShow the answer
Futuuria will + verbin perusmuoto käytetään, kun päätös tehdään puhehetkellä (It is raining. — I will take the car.), kun tarjoudutaan tekemään jotakin (I will carry your bags. I will make the coffee.) ja kun luvataan jotakin (I won't be long. I won't lose your keys.). Sanan will jälkeen tulee verbin perusmuoto ilman s-päätettä ja ilman sanaa to: I will answer the email now. Puheessa will supistuu muotoon 'll (I'll go with you, I'll get some milk). Kielteinen muoto on will not tai won't. Kysymys alkaa sanalla Will, ja lyhyessä vastauksessa toistetaan will tai won't: Will you come tomorrow? — Yes, I will. No, I won't. Myönteisessä lyhyessä vastauksessa sanaa will ei supisteta.
Huomaa: suomessa puhehetken päätös, tarjous ja lupaus ilmaistaan preesensillä (”Minä avaan!”, ”En kerro kenellekään.”). Englannissa niissä ei käytetä Present Simple -muotoa: päätös ja tarjous ilmaistaan futuurilla will (I'll get it!), lupaus muodolla won't: I won't tell anyone, ei I don't tell anyone. Jo aiemmin tehty suunnitelma ilmaistaan rakenteella going to, ei futuurilla will.
Show the answer The phone is ringing. — I ___ (answer) it. will answerShow the answer
Show the answer We need some bread. — OK, I ___ (go) to the shop. will goShow the answer
Present Simple -muotoa (preesens) käytetään aikatauluista ja ohjelmista, jotka on vahvistettu etukäteen (liikenne, elokuvat, kaupat, koulu), myös silloin, kun puhutaan tulevasta: The bus leaves at nine. The lesson starts at ten tomorrow. Yksikön 3. persoonassa verbiin lisätään s-pääte (starts, leaves, opens, closes, arrives), sh-loppuiseen verbiin es-pääte (finishes). Kielteinen lause muodostetaan muodolla doesn't ja verbin perusmuodolla (This bus doesn't go to the station, The café doesn't open on Mondays). Kysymys muodostetaan apuverbillä does, ei verbillä be: When does the next train arrive? Does the lesson start at ten?, ei Is the lesson start at ten?
Tässä käytössä kielet vastaavat toisiaan: suomessakin aikataulu ilmaistaan preesensillä (”Bussi lähtee yhdeksältä.”).

Show the answer The film ___ (start) at eight. startsShow the answer
Rakenne valitaan tilanteen mukaan. Päätetty suunnitelma ja näkyvään merkkiin perustuva ennuste ilmaistaan rakenteella going to (It is going to snow in the mountains. Ben is hungry. He is going to eat an apple.). Sovittu meno ilmaistaan Present Continuous -muodolla (We are going to the theatre on Friday.), aikataulu ja aukioloaika preesensillä (The next train leaves at ten. The shop closes at eight.). Futuuria will käytetään puhehetkellä tehdystä päätöksestä (I will open the window.), ilmauksen I think jälkeen mielipiteestä tulevasta (I think you will like this book.) ja lupauksesta (I won't tell anyone. Nothing will happen to your car.). Kysymyksiin pätee sama periaate: What are you doing on Sunday? ja Are you meeting Anna tomorrow? kysyvät sovitusta menosta.

Neljä rakennetta sekoittuvat: going to (are going to be, are going to hurt), Present Continuous (is starting, are having, are visiting, What are you doing?), futuuri will (will get, won't lose, will like) ja Present Simple (closes, What time does … leave?). Suomen ennustava ”tulla + -maan” -rakenne (”Tulet pitämään siitä.”) ilmaistaan futuurilla will, ja rakenne valitaan lauseessa kuvatun tilanteen mukaan.
