1. celui-ci, celle-là

The demonstrative pronoun replaces a noun that has just been named, so it agrees with it. The ending -ci points to what is near and -là to what is farther away.

MasculineFeminine
Singularcelui-ci, celui-làcelle-ci, celle-là
Pluralceux-ci, ceux-làcelles-ci, celles-là

Ce pull est cher, mais celui-là est bon marché. Ces tasses sont jolies, mais celles-ci sont plus grandes. Two things are often set side by side: celui-ci … celui-là, this one … that one. The English speaker's trap is this one alone: ce cannot stand without a noun, so French says celui-ci or celle-ci.

2. le mien, le tien, le sien

The possessive pronoun replaces a noun together with its possessive (mon sac → le mien). It has the article le, la or les, and it agrees with the thing owned, not with the owner.

MasculineFeminine
Singularle mien, le tien, le sienla mienne, la tienne, la sienne
Pluralles miens, les tiens, les siensles miennes, les tiennes, les siennes

Mon sac est lourd, et le tien est léger. Elle a sa valise, et j'ai la mienne. Léa porte ses lunettes, et Tom cherche les siennes. The English speaker's trap is his and hers: both are le sien or la sienne, chosen by the gender of the thing (Sophie a son chien, et Lucas a le sien).

3. tout, toute, tous, toutes

Before a noun, tout means the whole or all, and it agrees with the noun: tout le fromage, toute la famille, tous les amis, toutes ces chemises. The article, the demonstrative or the possessive stays after it. In time phrases the plural means every: tous les dimanches, toutes les nuits. Tout le monde means everybody and takes a singular verb: Tout le monde est content. Meaning everything, tout does not change: Elle a tout mangé. As a pronoun after the verb, tous and toutes agree with the subject, and tous is then pronounced with its s: Mes amis sont tous ici.

The English speaker's trap is all day: English has no ending and no article, but French writes toute la journée.

4. on: we, they, someone

The pronoun on is always a subject, and the verb takes the il form (on mange, on boit, on prend, on va, on est). It has three meanings. It replaces nous in everyday speech (Le dimanche, on dîne chez mes parents). It means people in general or they (En Italie, on boit beaucoup de café; On dit qu'il va pleuvoir). It can also stand for someone who is not named, like quelqu'un (Écoute, on t'appelle). An object pronoun comes before the verb: On nous attend au restaurant.

The English speaker's traps are they say, which is on dit and not ils disent (a named group), and the nous ending after on (on mangeons for on mange).

5. le nôtre, le vôtre, le leur

The possessive pronouns of the plural owners follow the same rule: the article, then the pronoun, agreeing with the thing owned.

MasculineFeminine
Singularle nôtre, le vôtre, le leurla nôtre, la vôtre, la leur
Pluralles nôtres, les vôtres, les leursles nôtres, les vôtres, les leurs

Votre appartement est grand, et le nôtre est petit. Leur fille a dix ans, et la nôtre a huit ans. Nos enfants sont à l'école, et les leurs sont à la maison. Nôtre and vôtre take a circumflex, which notre and votre before a noun do not have. Leur has no accent, and only the plural takes an s: les leurs. The English pronouns (ours, yours, theirs) never change, but the French pronoun follows the thing owned. Le vôtre also serves for one person addressed as vous.

6. This one, mine, all: mixed practice

The demonstrative pronouns, the possessive pronouns of all persons, tout with a noun, and on are mixed, so that the pronoun, the gender and the number must be chosen each time.
