1. Two pronouns: me le, le lui

When a verb has a direct and an indirect object pronoun, both come before the verb, in a fixed order.

  • Ton vélo ? Je te le prête.Your bike? I'll lend it to you.
  • Les photos ? Je les leur prête.The photos? I'm lending them to them.
  • Tu veux le lui dire ?Do you want to tell him?

Formation

le, la, leslui, leurJe le lui apporte, Je la lui rends, Je les lui apporte, Je les leur prête, Je la leur apporte
  • With an infinitive, both pronouns are placed before the infinitive: Tu veux le lui dire ? (“Do you want to tell him?”)
  • In the passé composé (past simple), both are placed before the auxiliary.
  • The past participle agrees with the direct object: Elle voulait la clé : je la lui ai donnée. (“She wanted the key: I gave it to her.”)

Difference from English

  • “I give it to him” is Je le lui donne: both pronouns come before the verb.

Common mistakes

  • Je lui le donne. → Je le lui donne.Le, la and les come before lui and leur, whatever the English order.
  • Je le te prête. → Je te le prête.Me, te, nous and vous come before le, la and les.

2. Two pronouns with y and en: m'en, lui en, il y en a

En is the last of the object pronouns and is placed right before the verb.

  • Des bonbons ? Je lui en offre trois.Sweets? I'm giving her three.
  • Il y en a douze. There are twelve of them.
  • Tu ne m'en prêtes pas. You're not lending me any.
  • Vous m'en envoyez ?Will you send me some?

Formation

  • Before en, me and te are elided to m'en and t'en: Je t'en prête. (“I'll lend you some.”)
  • The other forms are lui en, leur en, nous en and vous en: Je vous en envoie deux.
  • In the passé composé (past simple), both are placed before the auxiliary: Je lui en ai offert six. (“I gave him six.”)
  • With an infinitive, both are placed before the infinitive: Je veux lui en prêter trois. (“I want to lend him three.”)

Negative and il y a

  • In the negative, ne is placed before the pronouns and pas after the verb.
  • With en, il y a becomes il y en a: Il n'y en a pas. (“There aren't any.”)

Difference from English

  • English may leave the object out (“I'm giving them two”); French needs en: Je leur en offre deux.

Common mistakes

  • Je lui offre trois. → Je lui en offre trois. With a number and no noun, en stands for the noun left out.
  • Il y a douze. → Il y en a douze.“There are twelve” with no noun also needs en.

3. En and y for things, de lui and à elle for people

Y and en replace a thing after à or de; a person takes lui, leur or a stressed pronoun.

  • Il pense à elle. He's thinking about her.
  • Ils parlent de lui. They're talking about him.
  • Elle n'a pas peur d'eux. She isn't afraid of them.

Formation

a thing after à → ya thing after de → en
penser à son voyage → j'y penseavoir besoin de ce stylo → il en a besoin
répondre à la lettre → il y répondparler de ses vacances → ils en parlent
jouer au foot → j'y jouejouer du piano → j'en joue
  • For a thing, y replaces à + a noun, and en replaces de + a noun.
  • For a person, most of these verbs take neither y nor en.
  • A person is then a stressed pronoun: à lui, à elle, à eux, à elles, de lui, d'elle, d'eux, d'elles.
  • With most verbs followed by à, such as répondre and téléphoner, a person is replaced by lui or leur. For example, Elle ne lui téléphone pas. (“She doesn't phone him.”)

Difference from English

  • English “it” after a verb with to, about or of is often y or en in French. “She's talking about it” is Elle en parle.
  • English “him” or “them” after about is a stressed pronoun: “I'm thinking about them” is Je pense à eux.

Common mistake

  • Je lui pense. → Je pense à lui.Penser à takes no indirect object pronoun: a person is replaced by à lui or à elle.
