1. The conditionnel présent: forms

The conditionnel (would) is formed with the stem of the futur simple (will) and imparfait (past continuous) endings.

  • Avec une voiture, nous irions à la mer. With a car, we would go to the seaside.
  • À ta place, je ferais une pause. If I were you, I would take a break.
  • Elle voudrait un chat. She would like a cat.

Formation

  • The endings are -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient for every verb; after on, the ending is -ait: on irait.
  • With a regular verb, the endings are added to the infinitive, without the final e of -re. Regular forms include je parlerais, tu finirais, il attendrait and ils attendraient.
  • An irregular verb has the stem of its futur simple: vous seriez, nous serions, nous irions, je ferais. Other irregular forms include elle voudrait, tu pourrais, ils auraient, nous aurions and nous viendrions.

Difference from English

  • English “would” is a separate word, but the conditionnel is one word with its own ending. “I would walk” is j'irais à pied.
  • The conditionnel ending -ais is not the futur simple ending -ai. The form je partirais is “I would leave”, and je partirai is “I will leave”.

2. Wishes and advice: tu devrais, j'aimerais bien

The conditionnel (would) is used to soften a wish, a piece of advice or a request.

  • J'aimerais visiter Lyon un jour.I would like to visit Lyon one day.
  • Tu devrais appeler ta mère.You should call your mother.
  • Pourriez-vous fermer la fenêtre ?Could you close the window?

Use

  • A wish is in the conditionnel: j'aimerais bien partir, nous aimerions, je voudrais.
  • Advice is given with devoir in the conditionnel: tu devrais dormir, vous devriez, ils devraient, nous devrions.
  • Advice is also given with faire mieux de in the conditionnel: tu ferais mieux de rester.
  • A polite request is in the conditionnel: pourriez-vous m'aider ? (“Could you help me?”), vous pourriez répéter ? (“Could you repeat that?”). A suggestion is in the conditionnel too: on pourrait manger ici.

Difference from English

  • English “should” and “ought to” correspond to devoir in the conditionnel: devrais, devrait, devriez. The present tu dois is “you must”, which is stronger.

Common mistake

  • Je voudrai un café, s'il vous plaît. → Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît.A polite request is in the conditionnel, ending -ais, not the futur simple (will) -ai.

  • Ce serait une belle surprise. It would be a nice surprise.

  • An imagined situation is in the conditionnel: ce serait parfait, on irait à la plage, je voyagerais.
  • An imagined situation can be in any person: nous parlerions, les enfants dormiraient, ils pourraient venir, on mangerait.
  • The scene is often set by a phrase of place, means or manner. Such phrases include dans un autre pays, avec beaucoup d'argent and sans école.
  • Ce serait + adjective is the usual way to say “it would be …”. The form il y aurait is “there would be”: il y aurait un jardin.

  • Le ministre serait à Paris. The minister is said to be in Paris.
  • Selon la police, il y aurait deux blessés.According to the police, two people are reportedly injured.

Use

  • The source is often named with selon: Selon le journal, l'acteur serait malade. (“According to the paper, the actor is said to be ill.”)
  • Unconfirmed news can be given with any verb: il aurait vingt ans, il viendrait demain, le magasin fermerait. Other examples include il y aurait un accident, elle voudrait partir and le match commencerait.
  • In the présent (present simple), the same news is stated as a fact: L'acteur est malade. (“The actor is ill.”)

Common mistake

  • L'acteur est dit malade. → L'acteur serait malade.“Reportedly”, “is said to” and “apparently” are not translated word for word: the conditionnel is enough.

5. Conditionnel or futur simple?

The futur simple (will) and the conditionnel (would) are formed on the same stem and differ only in their endings.

  • Si tu viens demain, je serai là. Si tu venais, je serais content. If you come tomorrow, I will be there. If you came, I would be happy.

Formation

  • The endings of the futur simple are -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont.
  • The endings of the conditionnel are -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
  • With je, many speakers pronounce je viendrai and je viendrais alike. The spelling is then chosen from the meaning: je pourrai, je pourrais.
  • With nous and vous, the i of the conditionnel is heard: nous irons, nous irions.

Use

  • The futur simple is used for what is sure or planned, with demain or a date, and after quand. Quand il sera là, nous dînerons. (“When he is here, we will have dinner.”)
  • After a si clause in the présent (present simple), the futur simple is used: S'il pleut, elle ira en voiture. (“If it rains, she will drive.”)
  • After a si clause in the imparfait (past continuous), the conditionnel is used: Si elle avait le temps, elle voyagerait. (“If she had time, she would travel.”)
  • The conditionnel is also used after à ta place (j'irais) and for what is wished, advised or imagined. Its forms include j'aimerais, nous nagerions and il jouerait.

Difference from English

  • English “will” is the futur simple, je viendrai, and “would” is the conditionnel, je viendrais.

Common mistake

  • Si tu viendrais, je serais content. → Si tu venais, je serais content. In a si clause of condition (“if”), neither the futur simple nor the conditionnel is used. The verb is in the présent or the imparfait.

Remember

  • Choose the tense from the meaning, never from the sound. The form je pourrai is “I will be able to”, and je pourrais is “I could”.
  • After si + imparfait, use the conditionnel: Si elle avait le temps, elle voyagerait. (“If she had time, she would travel.”)
