1. The values of si: condition, question, opposition, intensity

Si has four main values, and the tense that follows it depends on the value.

  • Condition: si is followed by the présent when the result is in the futur (si l'usine ferme, si vous venez), never by the futur or the conditionnel.
  • Indirect question (whether): si may be followed by the futur or the conditionnel: ouvrira (or va ouvrir, ouvre), viendrais (or venais after a verb in the past).
  • Opposition (whereas): si followed by the indicative sets two facts against each other, like alors que, tandis que or même si.
  • Intensity (so): si + adjective or adverb, often followed by que and a result, like tellement: si long que, si ému que, and in an exclamation elle parle si bien !
  • Quand followed by the conditionnel also marks an opposition, like alors que, in a formal style: il se tait quand il devrait protester.
  • Si becomes s' before il and ils only: s'il, s'ils, but si elle, si on.

Je ne sais pas s'il pleuvra demain, mais si le ciel est gris, je prendrai un parapluie.

The English speaker's trap: if it rains is s'il pleut, never si il pleuvra: neither si il nor the futur after a si of condition is correct French.

2. Framing a hypothesis: en admettant que, pour autant que, dès lors que

Several set phrases frame a hypothesis in a careful style, and the mood of the verb depends on the phrase.

  • En admettant que, en supposant que and à supposer que (assuming that, supposing that) are followed by the subjunctive: aies, parte, fasse, soit, puisse, vienne.
  • Pour autant que (as long as, as far as) limits a statement, and the set phrase pour autant que je sache (as far as I know) is in the subjunctive: sache, sachions.
  • Dès lors que (since, given that, once) states a fact and is followed by the indicative: est, vit, connais.

À supposer que le loyer soit trop cher, nous chercherons ailleurs.

The English speaker's trap: English assuming that is followed by an ordinary present, but en admettant que needs the subjunctive: en admettant qu'il soit là, never en admettant qu'il est là.

3. Unreal hypotheses revisited: même si, quand bien même, si… et que

An unreal hypothesis keeps the tenses of si, while quand bien même and the que that replaces a second si are followed by other moods.

  • Même si is followed by the imparfait for the present (avions, gagnions, était) and by the plus-que-parfait for the past (étais parti, étais partie, avait, avait été), never by the conditionnel.
  • Quand bien même (even if, formal) is followed by the conditionnel, like the main clause: offrirait, auriez, courrais, s'excuserait.
  • When que replaces a second si (si… et que), the verb after que is in the subjunctive in careful French: veuilles, soient, soit, ait. The indicative is also accepted: veux, sont, est, a.

Quand bien même la route serait libre, nous arriverions trop tard.

Si le colis arrive et que je sois absent, laissez-le chez la voisine.

The English speaker's trap: English would never comes after si in French: even if she had known is même si elle avait su, never même si elle aurait su, and even if he were rich is même s'il était riche.

4. Si and hypotheses: mixed practice

The values of si, quand for an opposition, the phrases that frame a hypothesis and the unreal hypotheses with même si, quand bien même and si… et que are mixed, so the mood and the tense are chosen from the sense each time. Forms met here include ouvrira, Si, Même si, fasse, venez, s'excuserait, si, tellement, connais, sachions, ait, avait été and quand.
