Voice and the noun group: the passive, nominal style, de nouvelles idées
Choosing between the active and the passive (a été construit, on a construit, se porte), the nominal style with le fait de and le fait que, nouns built with suffixes and prefixes (licenciement, instabilité), de nouvelles idées against des idées nouvelles, and the infinitive after verbs of perception (je les ai vus partir).
The passive is used to put the thing that undergoes the action first, or to leave the doer out. It is formed with être and the past participle, the tense is carried by être, and the participle agrees with the subject: a été construit, a été annulé, a été inauguré, ont été reçus, seront publiés, vont être publiés, sera vendue, a été prise. The doer is introduced by par (by de after a few verbs of feeling or state: aimé de tous).
Without a known doer, French also uses on with an active verb (On a vendu la ferme) or, for a general fact, the pronominal passive (se porte, s'emploie). In the active voice, the agent becomes the subject: Deux policiers ont arrêté le voleur. Only a direct object becomes a passive subject.
Le musée a été rénové par une architecte italienne. On a rénové le musée. Le musée se visite le dimanche.
The English speaker's trap: “I was told”, “we were asked”, “she was given a book” have no passive in French, since dire à, demander à and donner à have an indirect object: On m'a dit, On nous a demandé, On lui a donné un livre.

In headlines, reports and formal writing, a verb sentence becomes a noun phrase: the verb becomes a noun, and its subject or object follows de: La piscine a fermé gives la fermeture de la piscine, On a construit une nouvelle école gives la construction d'une nouvelle école. An adverb becomes an adjective: fortement gives la forte augmentation des loyers, lentement gives la lente baisse du chômage.
Back to a verb sentence, the complement becomes the subject: Départ du président gives Le président part, partira or va partir, as the context requires.
Le fait de is followed by an infinitive, and de becomes d' before a vowel: le fait de travailler, le fait d'être fatigué. Le fait que is followed by a clause, in the subjunctive when the fact is commented on (soient, viennes), in the indicative when it is stated as real (sont, viens).
L'arrivée du nouveau directeur a été annoncée. Le fait qu'il parle anglais plaît aux clients.
The English speaker's trap: “Being late is rude” is rendered by le fait de + infinitive, never by the form in -ant.

Nouns of action from verbs end in -ment or -age, and are masculine: licencier, le licenciement; développer, le développement; lancer, le lancement; nettoyer, le nettoyage. For an -ir verb such as atterrir, the stem of nous atterrissons is used: l'atterrissage. Other verbs take -tion, -ure or -ance, which give feminine nouns: la réduction, la blessure, la naissance.
Nouns of quality are feminine: -ité or -té (rapide, la rapidité; fier, la fierté), -esse (gentil, la gentillesse), -eur (large, la largeur), -ance or -ence (patient, la patience). A noun of a person who acts ends in -eur and is masculine: le vendeur.
A prefix changes the meaning. in- (il- before l, im- before b, m, p, ir- before r) gives the contrary: stable, l'instabilité; capable, l'incapacité. dé-, or dés- before a vowel, gives the opposite: le désaccord, le désordre. mé- gives a negative meaning: content, le mécontentement. re- or ré- gives the idea of again: la reconstruction.
The English speaker's trap: “the cleaning”, “the landing” are nouns in -age or -ment, never forms in -ant.

In writing and careful speech, the plural article des becomes de when an adjective comes before the noun: de nouvelles idées, de bons amis, de belles maisons, de jolies lampes, and d' before a vowel: d'excellentes vacances, d'autres projets. When the adjective follows the noun, des is used: des idées nouvelles, des villages magnifiques, des gens très sympathiques.
After a negation, des becomes de whatever the order: Il n'y a pas de places, except after être: Ce ne sont pas des touristes. When the adjective and the noun form one compound noun, des is kept: des petits pois, des grands-parents, des jeunes gens.
The English speaker's trap: des nouvelles idées is heard in speech, but written French uses de nouvelles idées.

After voir, regarder, entendre, écouter or sentir, the action perceived is an infinitive: J'entends les enfants chanter, la pluie tomber, Je l'ai vu quitter le bureau. A pronoun is placed before the verb of perception: Je les entends jouer. In a compound tense, the participle agrees with a preceding pronoun that does the action of the infinitive: Je les ai vus partir, je l'ai vue, je les ai entendus, je les ai regardées.
On voyait les bateaux entrer dans le port. Ces bateaux, je les ai vus partir à l'aube.
The English speaker's trap: the English “-ing” form covers three French forms and the infinitive. “I hear the children singing” is J'entends les enfants chanter, not chantant, and “a moving letter” is une lettre émouvante, with agreement.
