The past: the imperfetto
Describing the past in Italian: the imperfetto of regular verbs (parlavo, prendevo, dormivo) and of essere, fare, dire and bere (ero, facevo, dicevo, bevevo), habits and descriptions (da bambino giocavo), the choice between the imperfetto and the passato prossimo, then mentre and durante.
The imperfetto is formed on the infinitive without -re, followed by the endings -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano. They are the same for all three conjugations: parlare → parlavo, parlavi, parlava, parlavamo, parlavate, parlavano; prendere → prendevo, prendevi, prendeva, prendevamo, prendevate, prendevano; dormire → dormivo, dormivi, dormiva, dormivamo, dormivate, dormivano.
Alle sei Anna cucinava. “At six, Anna was cooking.” Prima abitavamo a Milano. “We used to live in Milan.” Likewise: lavorava, guardavate, vivevano, ascoltavamo, leggevi, giocavano.
The trap: -isc- verbs such as capire, finire, preferire have no -isc- in the imperfetto: capivo, capiva, finivano, not capiscevo.

Essere has an irregular imperfetto: ero, eri, era, eravamo, eravate, erano. Ieri alle cinque eravamo al parco. Erano stanchi.
Fare, dire and bere take the regular endings on the stems fac-, dic- and bev-:
- fare → facevo, facevi, faceva, facevamo, facevate, facevano
- dire → dicevo, dicevi, diceva, dicevamo, dicevate, dicevano
- bere → bevevo, bevevi, beveva, bevevamo, bevevate, bevevano
Che cosa facevi? “What were you doing?” Il nonno beveva un caffè. Mia madre diceva sempre sì.
The trap: these forms are not built on the infinitive: dicevi, not direvi, and faceva, not fareva. “You were saying” is dicevi, or stavi dicendo with stare.

The imperfetto is used for what happened regularly in the past, often with sempre, di solito, ogni estate, il sabato: Il sabato andavamo al cinema. “On Saturdays we used to go to the cinema.” It is also used to describe a person, a place, the weather or someone's age: Mio padre era alto. La casa aveva un giardino. Faceva caldo. Avevo dieci anni.
English “used to” and “would” for a past habit have no word of their own in Italian: they are expressed by the imperfetto alone.
“As a child” is usually da bambino (or da bambina); likewise da ragazzo, da giovane, with no verb: Da ragazza Anna nuotava molto. “As a girl, Anna swam a lot.”
So: aveva, era, uscivano, andavamo, arrivava, giocavate, faceva.
The trap: in da bambino, da is followed by the noun alone, with no verb and no article, and “as” is not come.

The passato prossimo tells a completed action, at a given moment or over a limited time: Ieri ho visto un film. Abbiamo lavorato tutto il giorno. The imperfetto says what was going on, a state, a cause or a habit: Quando Paolo è arrivato, mangiavo. “When Paolo arrived, I was eating.” Non sono uscita perché ero stanca.
The English speaker's trap: the English simple past covers both. “I was eating” is the imperfetto, but “I ate”, “it was”, “she had” can be either: the imperfetto for the background, the passato prossimo for the event.
So: è arrivato, abbiamo visto, è andata, è caduto for the events, aveva, faceva, andavo, beveva, c'era for the background.
“There was” is c'era before a singular, but “there were” is c'erano: C'erano molte persone. “There were a lot of people.”

Mentre (while) is followed by a verb, usually in the imperfetto, for the action in progress: Mentre cucinavo, ascoltavo la radio. The action that interrupts it is in the passato prossimo: Mentre leggevo, ha telefonato Anna. With quando, a single completed action is in the passato prossimo: Quando è entrata, tutti parlavano.
Durante (during) is followed by a noun: durante il viaggio, durante la notte.
The English speaker's trap: after “while”, English often uses the simple past (“while I worked”), but Italian puts the action in progress in the imperfetto: mentre lavoravo. “Were sleeping” is dormivi or stavi dormendo, with stare, not essere.
So: faceva, guidavo, aspettavamo, dormivi, lavoravo, è finito, è entrato, è uscita, mentre, durante.
