1. Where and where to: w kinie, do kina

With a verb of being, such as być, mieszkać or pracować, the answer to gdzie? is w + locative: w banku, w szkole, w pracy, we Wrocławiu (w is written we before w or f and a consonant). With a verb of motion, iść or jechać, the answer to dokąd? is do + genitive: do kina, do domu, do Gdańska, do Krakowa, do Torunia.

  • Gdzie jest Tomek? — W banku. — Where is Tomek? — At the bank.
  • Dokąd idziecie? — Do parku. — Where are you going? — To the park.

The English speaker's trap: English where asks both questions, but Polish uses gdzie for a place and dokąd for a direction.

2. Places with na and nad: na poczcie, na pocztę, nad morze

Some places take na, not w: poczta, dworzec, uniwersytet, przystanek, plaża, wieś, and events such as a concert or a match. For being there, na is followed by the locative: na poczcie, na uniwersytecie, na przystanku, na wsi. For going there, na is followed by the accusative, not do + genitive: na pocztę, na plażę, na dworzec.

The sea, a lake and a river take nad: nad + instrumental for being there (nad morzem, nad rzeką), nad + accusative for going there (nad morze, nad rzekę). The mountains are góry, a plural: w górach (locative) for being there, w góry (accusative) for going there.

  • Ewa czeka na dworcu. — Ewa is waiting at the station.
  • W lipcu Kuba jedzie nad jezioro. — Kuba is going to the lake in July.

The English speaker's trap: English to is not always do: to the post office is na pocztę, to the seaside is nad morze.

3. Where from: z kina, u lekarza, od lekarza

The answer to skąd? is z + genitive, for w places and na places alike: z pracy, z kina, z poczty, z dworca, z uniwersytetu. Before s, sz, z or ż and a consonant, z is written ze: ze szkoły, ze sklepu.

With a person, three other prepositions are used, all followed by the genitive: u for being at someone's (u lekarza, u brata, u babci), do for going to someone (do lekarza, do babci), and od for coming back from someone (od lekarza).

  • Skąd jesteś? — Z Lublina. — Where are you from? — From Lublin.
  • Mama wraca od dentysty. — Mum is coming back from the dentist's.

The English speaker's trap: from the doctor's is od lekarza, not z lekarza, because lekarz is a person.

4. Above, under, behind, between: nad stołem, przed domem

Przed (in front of), za (behind), nad (above), pod (under) and między (between) are followed by the instrumental when they say where something is. Masculine and neuter nouns take -em (-iem after k and g: przed bankiem), feminine nouns -ą, plural nouns -ami: pod stołem, pod krzesłem, przed domem, przed bankiem, za kinem, za szpitalem, nad rzeką, za szkołą, nad drzwiami. After między both nouns are in the instrumental, joined by a: między sklepem a hotelem, między oknem a drzwiami.

  • Pies śpi pod łóżkiem. — The dog is sleeping under the bed.
  • Między kinem a parkiem jest kawiarnia. — There's a café between the cinema and the park.

The English speaker's trap: in front of is one word in Polish, przed, and it is followed by the instrumental, not the genitive.

5. Next to, near, opposite: obok poczty, naprzeciwko kina

Obok (next to), koło (near, next to), naprzeciwko (opposite), blisko (near, close to), wzdłuż (along) and na wprost (straight across from) are followed by the genitive: obok poczty, obok banku, koło dworca, koło sklepu, naprzeciwko kina, naprzeciwko hotelu, blisko parku, blisko morza, wzdłuż rzeki, na wprost szkoły.

  • Apteka jest koło kościoła. — The chemist's is near the church.
  • Mieszkamy naprzeciwko parku. — We live opposite the park.

The English speaker's trap: the instrumental of przed, za, nad, pod and między is not used here: obok banku, not obok bankiem.

6. Where things are: stoi, leży, wisi

Where English says is, Polish often uses one of three verbs that show how a thing is placed. Stać is used for things standing upright (furniture, a computer, a parked car): stoi, plural stoją. Leżeć is used for things lying flat (a key, a book, a phone, a cat on a bed): leży, plural leżą. Wisieć is used for things hanging (a lamp, a clock or a photo on a wall, a jacket on a hook): wisi, plural wiszą. The present of stać is stoję, stoisz, stoi, stoimy, stoicie, stoją; of leżeć leżę, leżysz, leży, leżymy, leżycie, leżą; of wisieć wiszę, wisisz, wisi, wisimy, wisicie, wiszą.

  • Na biurku stoi lampa, a obok leży telefon. — There's a lamp on the desk, and a phone next to it.
  • Na ścianie wiszą obrazy. — There are paintings on the wall.

The English speaker's trap: jest is always correct, but a clock on a wall wisi: leży is used only for things lying flat.
