1. Saying what someone is: jestem studentem, studentką

After być, a noun naming what someone is, such as a job, stands in the instrumental. Polish has no article, so nothing translates “a”.

NominativeInstrumental
student, lekarz, nauczyciel, kelnerstudentem, lekarzem, nauczycielem, kelnerem
studentka, lekarka, nauczycielka, aktorka, kelnerkastudentką, lekarką, nauczycielką, aktorką, kelnerką
kierowca (masculine in -a)kierowcą

Masculine nouns ending in a consonant take -em. Nouns ending in -a take -ą, the masculine ones such as kierowca included. The question word is kim? (the instrumental of kto), and for things czym? (the instrumental of co): Kim jest twoja siostra? — Jest kelnerką. A name after jestem stays in the nominative: Jestem Marta. Jestem lekarką.

The English speaker's trap is the nominative after jestem: Jestem student is a mistake, Jestem studentem is correct.

2. Adjectives after być: dobrym lekarzem, dobrą lekarką

An adjective before a noun in the instrumental agrees with it. The masculine adjective takes -ym, or -im after k and g. The feminine adjective takes -ą, like its noun.

MasculineFeminine
dobrydobrym lekarzemdobrą lekarką
miłymiłym nauczycielemmiłą kobietą
młody, nowy, świetnynowym kelnerem, świetnym studentemmłodą studentką
wysokiwysokim mężczyznąwysoką
mójmoim bratemmoją siostrą

Mój and moja take the adjective endings: Adam jest moim przyjacielem. With a feminine noun the adjective takes the feminine ending: dobrym kelnerką is a mistake, dobrą kelnerką is correct.

3. This is or he is: to jest lekarz, on jest lekarzem

English says is in both This is a doctor and He is a doctor. Polish uses two cases:

  • to jest introduces someone or something, and the noun stays in the nominative: To jest kelner, a to jest lekarka. The question is kto?: Kto to jest?
  • on jest, ona jest or a name with jest says what someone is, and the noun takes the instrumental: On jest lekarzem. Ona jest studentką. The question is kim?

Example: To jest pani Magda. Jest aktorką. The same noun changes with the construction: To jest nauczycielka, but Ona jest nauczycielką. To jest student, but On jest studentem. The trap is the instrumental after to jest: To jest lekarzem is a mistake, To jest lekarz is correct. To jest comes first in the usual order (To jest moja mama), and Jest to moja mama is a more formal order.

4. With someone or something: z kolegą, kawa z mlekiem

The preposition z, meaning “with” (together with), is followed by the instrumental. The endings are the same as after być: -em for masculine and neuter nouns (-iem after k and g), -ą for nouns in -a.

  • masculine: z bratem, z serem, z panem, z przyjacielem
  • neuter: z mlekiem, z masłem
  • in -a: z siostrą, z mamą, z przyjaciółką, z kolegą; pani becomes z panią

In some nouns the last e drops: cukier → z cukrem, pies → z psem. Spotykać się (to meet) and rozmawiać (to talk to) are followed by z and the instrumental: Spotykam się z kolegą. Where English has “my” or “her” (with my sister), Polish usually has no possessive: Rozmawiam z siostrą. The trap is the nominative after z: z pies is a mistake, z psem is correct.

The personal pronouns have their own instrumental forms:

Nominativejatyon, onoonamywyoni, one
With zze mnąz tobąz nimz niąz namiz wamiz nimi

Before mną, z becomes ze: Pijesz kawę ze mną? After a preposition, the third person pronouns begin with n-: nim, nią, nimi. The polite pan and pani become z panem, z panią. The same forms are used in questions: Rozmawiasz z nimi? The trap is the accusative after z: z ją is a mistake, z nią is correct.

6. The instrumental plural: z kolegami, dobrymi studentami

In the plural, nouns of every gender take -ami, and adjectives -ymi, or -imi after k and g:

  • student → studentami, studentka → studentkami, lekarz → lekarzami, nauczycielka → nauczycielkami, kelnerka → kelnerkami, aktorka → aktorkami, córka → córkami, przyjaciółka → przyjaciółkami, kot → kotami, kobieta → kobietami, kolega → kolegami
  • dobry → dobrymi, miły → miłymi, młody → młodymi, wysoki → wysokimi, mój → moimi

Dzieci has a short ending: z dziećmi. After są, the plural takes the instrumental as the singular does: Magda i Zosia są miłymi studentkami, Oni są dobrymi lekarzami, Moje córki są nauczycielkami. Są dobrymi nauczycielki is a mistake: the noun takes -ami too.

  • zajmować się (to do as a job, to deal with): Pani Anna zajmuje się muzyką.
  • opiekować się (to look after): opiekuję się kotem, psem
