The past: telling a story
Saying when something happened and telling events in order in the Polish past: wczoraj, przedwczoraj, tydzień temu, with a length of time in the accusative (godzinę temu, minutę temu), then najpierw, potem and później, as in Najpierw zjadła śniadanie, potem poszła do pracy.
Wczoraj means yesterday and przedwczoraj (przed + wczoraj) the day before yesterday; both combine with a part of the day: wczoraj rano, wczoraj wieczorem. The question kiedy? (when?) asks for the time. A length of time followed by temu means “ago”: tydzień temu, miesiąc temu, rok temu, dwa dni temu, dwa tygodnie temu, trzy lata temu. As in English, temu is placed after the length of time, and temu counts back from the moment of speaking.
The length of time before temu stands in the accusative. Masculine nouns such as tydzień, miesiąc and rok do not change, but a feminine noun in -a takes -ę:
| Nominative | Before temu |
|---|---|
| tydzień | tydzień temu |
| godzina | godzinę temu |
| minuta | minutę temu |
The English speaker's trap is to keep the nominative: godzina temu is wrong, godzinę temu is right.
The verb is in the past and agrees with its subject: Adam był, Kasia była, to było, Kasia, co robiłaś?, Jan pracował, Piotr dzwonił. A group with a man in it takes -li (mieszkali, byli), a group of women -ły (czytały, były). Nie było is followed by the genitive: nie było chleba.
Trzy dni temu Adam był w Gdańsku. Kiedy Ola tam mieszkała? — Rok temu.

A story told step by step opens with najpierw (first); the next step is introduced by potem (then, afterwards), or by później (later) and, in a more formal style, następnie. A potem (and then) is written with a comma before a. Each step is an event done once and finished, so the verbs of such a story are mostly perfective. Their past is formed as for any verb: zjadła, wypił, poszliśmy, pojechał, wziął, zaczęły, kupili, zobaczyła, obejrzeli (with -eli, as mieli), przeczytała, zadzwonił, spotkały się.
A length of time followed by później means “later”: tydzień później, miesiąc później. It counts from a moment of the story, while temu counts back from now: W lipcu byli w Krakowie, a tydzień później w Gdańsku, but Byli w Krakowie tydzień temu. As before temu, the length of time stands in the accusative: godzinę później, not godzina później.
Najpierw Jan zjadł obiad, a potem poszedł do parku.
