Spelling: e or é, esta or está, há or à

A2 Catalogue 35 cards

Portuguese words that differ only by an accent: e (and) and é (is), esta (this) and está (is), pais (parents) and país (country), avó and avô, tem (one) and têm (several), a, à (to the) and há (there is, for). The accent changes the word, so each card asks for the right spelling.

1. Writing the accent: e or é, esta or está

e (no accent) is the word “and”: o café e o bolo. é (acute accent) is the verb ser, “is”, in ele / ela / você é: A Rita é professora. Spoken, the two differ as well: e is a very short sound, é is open and clear.

esta (no accent) is the demonstrative “this”, feminine: esta mala, or alone, Quero esta. está (acute accent) is the verb estar, “is”, in ele / ela / você está, for where something is and for how it is now: A chave está na mesa. The stressed syllable of está is the last one.

The English speaker's trap: English writes “and” and “is” as different words, so the accent on é is easily forgotten. Two sentences show the difference: in A mãe e o pai são médicos, e is “and”; in A mãe é médica, é is “is”. In the same way esta is never “is”: Esta casa está limpa has both.

2. Writing the accent: pais or país, avó or avô, tem or têm, a, à or há

pais (no accent) is the plural of pai, and means “parents”: os meus pais. país (acute accent on the í) is “country”: um país pequeno.

avó (acute accent) is the grandmother, avô (circumflex) the grandfather: a minha avó, o meu avô. The accent follows the sound, an open ó for the grandmother and a closed ô for the grandfather.

tem (no accent) is the third person singular of ter: ele / ela / você tem. têm (circumflex) is the third person plural: eles / elas / vocês têm. The circumflex marks the plural: O Rui tem um cão. Os vizinhos têm um gato.

a (no accent) is the article “the” or the preposition “to, at”: a casa, vou a Lisboa. à (grave accent) is the preposition a joined to the article a, before a feminine noun: Vamos à cidade. há (acute accent) is the verb haver, “there is” and, with a length of time, “for”: Há um café aqui. Trabalho aqui há cinco anos.

The English speaker's trap: English has no accent to show a plural or a contraction, so “they have” must be têm, not tem, and “to the” before a feminine noun is à, not a.
