The imperative gives an instruction, a piece of advice or an invitation. It has a form for tu, a form for a person addressed politely (você, o senhor, a senhora) and a form for vocês. The negative of the tu form differs from the affirmative, a few verbs are irregular, and on signs and in recipes an instruction is given with the infinitive.

Telling someone what to do: não fales, fale, falem, diga, vá#

Formation

A1 uses the affirmative imperative of tu (fala, come, abre) and of a person addressed politely (fale, coma, abra).

Vocês. The vocês form adds -m to the polite form: falem, comam, abram, digam, façam.

The negative. For você and vocês, the negative is the affirmative form with não: não fale, não comam. For tu, the negative has its own form: the vowel of the present tu form changes, -as becoming -es in -ar verbs and -es becoming -as in -er and -ir verbs: falas → não fales, comes → não comas, abres → não abras. Before -e, c is written qu, g is written gu and ç is written c: não fiques, não chegues, não comeces.

Forms built on the eu form. The polite form of most irregular verbs, and the negative tu form, are built on the eu form of the present: digo → diga, não digas; faço → faça, não faças; venho → venha; ponho → ponha; tenho → tenha; trago → traga; vejo → veja; ouço → ouça; peço → peça; saio → saia. The affirmative tu form of these verbs is the ele form of the present: diz, faz, vem, põe, tem, traz, vê.

Six irregular verbs. Ser, estar, ir, dar, saber and querer have forms of their own.

The imperative with a pronoun. In the affirmative, the pronoun follows the verb with a hyphen: senta-te, sente-se, sentem-se, dá-me, diga-me. In the negative, it is placed before the verb: não te sentes, não se preocupe, não me dês.

Use

The imperative is natural between friends and in instructions; to a stranger, the polite form is used, often with por favor (“please”) or se faz favor, the polite “please” of European Portuguese, usual with a waiter or in a shop. A request is softer as a question with poder: Podes fechar a porta?, Pode repetir?, and softer still with the imperfeito podia, explained in Polite requests and wishes: queria, podia, gostava de. Queira + infinitive is a very formal “please”: Queira sentar-se. The negative forms and the polite forms are also the forms of the presente do conjuntivo, a tense not otherwise used at A2.

  • Não comas tanto chocolate, Rui!Don’t eat so much chocolate, Rui!
  • Diga-me o seu nome, por favor.Tell me your name, please.
  • Não se preocupe, senhora Costa.Don’t worry, Mrs Costa.
  • Meninos, lavem as mãos antes do jantar.Children, wash your hands before dinner.
  • Vai depressa e não te esqueças do pão!Go quickly and don’t forget the bread!
  • Dois galões, se faz favor. Two milky coffees, please.

Difference from English

English has one imperative for everyone and makes the negative with “don’t”; in Portuguese the form depends on the person addressed and has a separate negative form for tu: “don’t speak” is não fales to a friend, não fale to a stranger and não falem to several people.

Common mistakes

Não fala tão alto! (to a friend) → Não fales tão alto! The negative tu form is fales.

  • Não vai sozinho. → Não vás sozinho. The negative of vai is não vás.
  • Faz o favor de esperar, senhor Lopes. → Faça o favor de esperar, senhor Lopes. To a person addressed politely, the form is faça.
  • Não senta-te aí. → Não te sentes aí.In the negative, the pronoun is placed before the verb, which takes the negative form.

The imperative in full: the forms of each verb#

Saying the forms of each verb in the order tu, você, vocês, then the negative tu form, fixes the pattern: the tu form is the ele form of the present, and the other forms have the vowel of the other conjugation.

The infinitive as an instruction: Não fumar. Empurrar.#

Formation

On signs, notices, forms and in recipes, an instruction to nobody in particular is given with the infinitive: Empurrar, Puxar, Não fumar, Não estacionar, Juntar o sal, Preencher em maiúsculas.

Use

The infinitive is impersonal; to a person, the imperative is used: Empurra! to a friend, Empurre! to a stranger. Some signs use the polite imperative instead: Não fume. Proibido + infinitive (“no …ing”) is also common: Proibido fumar.

  • Não tocar nos quadros.Do not touch the paintings.
  • Cozer as batatas durante vinte minutos.Boil the potatoes for twenty minutes.
  • Puxar.Pull.
  • Proibido estacionar.No parking.

Difference from English

English signs use the -ing form (“No smoking”) or the imperative (“Pull”); Portuguese signs use the infinitive: Não fumar, Puxar.

Common mistakes

  • Não fumando. → Não fumar.A sign uses the infinitive.
  • Puxar a porta, Rita! → Puxa a porta, Rita!To a person, the imperative is used.
