Every year in October we go to my grandmother's in the country to help with the harvest. Apples, berries and above all huge pumpkins grow in her garden. This time the pumpkins were so ripe that we had to cook them straight away. Grandma wanted to make a stew the way her own mother had cooked it.
First the pumpkin had to be peeled and cut into small pieces. That wasn't easy at all, because it was as hard as wood. Meanwhile Grandma fried onions and some mince in a big pot. Then in went a teaspoon of salt and a few sage leaves from the garden. Then she put the lid on the pot, and the stew had to simmer for two hours. She said that a good stew simply needs time.
When we finally sat down at the table, we were all absolutely starving. If I hadn't already eaten three plates, I would gladly have had more. For dessert there were pancakes with cherries as well. Afterwards we were so full that nobody wanted to get up any more.
