The past: olla and a few verbs (Olin kotona. Kävin kaupassa.)
The past of olla (olin, olit, oli, olimme, olitte, olivat) with ei ollut and minulla oli, the past of a few common verbs as phrases (menin, tulin, kävin, söin, join, tein), past questions and short answers (Olitko kotona? – Olin. / En ollut.), and the choice of the past or the present with eilen, nyt and huomenna.
The past of olla is built on ol- with the marker -i- and the personal endings: olin, olit, oli, olimme, olitte, olivat. The third person singular has no ending: oli is used for hän, a name or a noun. The negative is formed with the negative verb followed by ollut, the same form for every person in the singular: en ollut, et ollut, ei ollut. The past of minulla on is minulla oli (meillä oli, Annalla oli), and its negative is minulla ei ollut, followed by the partitive, as in the present.
- Eilen Jussi oli lääkärissä. Me olimme viime viikolla Kuopiossa.
- Laura ei ollut eilen koulussa. Sannalla oli kissa.
The English speaker's traps: after the negative verb, olla is not conjugated in the past (ei ollut, not ei oli), and English I had is minulla oli, never minä olin with an object.

A few common verbs are met in the past as phrases. The marker -i- replaces the last vowel of the stem: menen → menin, meni; tulen → tulin, tuli. In syödä and juoda the first vowel of the stem is lost: söin, söi; join, joi. tehdä has the past tein, teki, and käydä the past kävin, kävi, kävimme.
| Infinitive | minä | hän |
|---|---|---|
| mennä | menin | meni |
| tulla | tulin | tuli |
| käydä | kävin | kävi |
| syödä | söin | söi |
| juoda | join | joi |
| tehdä | tein | teki |
käydä is used for a visit that is over, went somewhere and came back, and is followed by the place in -ssa / -ssä (or -lla / -llä): kävin kaupassa, kävimme Tampereella. mennä is followed by the illative, the place one goes into: menin kauppaan.
- Viime viikolla Juha kävi Kuopiossa. Eilen Anna meni kotiin. Isä tuli eilen illalla Oulusta.
The English speaker's trap: English I went to the shop is kävin kaupassa when the visit is over, so the place takes -ssa, not the illative kauppaan.

A yes/no question in the past is formed as in the present: the particle -ko / -kö is added to the verb, which comes first: olitko, oliko, kävitkö, kävikö, menitkö. English did has no counterpart. The question about having is Oliko sinulla…? Oliko teillä…? The short answer repeats the verb in the past: Olin. / Oli. / Kävin. / Kävi. / Menin., often after kyllä (Kyllä oli.). The negative short answer to olitko is En ollut., to oliko Ei ollut.
- Olitko sinä eilen kahvilassa? – Olin. Oliko Ville viime viikolla Turussa? – Ei ollut.
The English speaker's trap: a question about yesterday keeps the past in the verb itself, olitko, not the present oletko.

The time word shows which tense is meant. With eilen, eilen illalla, viime viikolla, the verb is in the past: olin, oli, kävi, söimme, tulitte, join. With nyt and huomenna, the verb is in the present: olen, on, käy, menen, juon, syö. Finnish has no future tense, so an event of tomorrow is said in the present (Huomenna menen Lahteen). With tänään either tense is possible, depending on whether the act is over.
- Nyt Mikko on koulussa, mutta eilen hän oli kotona.
- Huomenna Aino käy museossa. Eilen hän kävi kaupassa.
The English speaker's trap: English I am going to the shop tomorrow is the present käyn or menen, never a past or a separate future form.
