1. The written accent: è, là, lì

e, with no accent, is the conjunction and; è, with a grave accent, is the verb essere (is): Luigi è stanco e ha fame. la is the article or the pronoun (the, her); là is the adverb over there. li is the pronoun them; lì is the adverb there. Là and lì have the same meaning.

la: the, her (article, pronoun)là: over there
li: them (pronoun)lì: there
  • La chiave è lì. — The key is there.

The English speaker's trap: English writes no accents, but the accent is part of the spelling: is is written è, and e without it means and.

  • Se vieni, ti dà il libro. — If you come, he'll give you the book.

3. The apostrophe: un po', c'è, un'amica

Before a vowel, lo and la are shortened to l' (l'amico, l'amica), ci before è and era to c'è and c'era, and dove before è usually to dov'è (dove è is also correct). In the feminine, una is usually shortened to un': un'amica, un'altra (una amica is still correct). In the masculine, un never takes an apostrophe: un amico, un uomo. Qual è is also written with no apostrophe, since qual is a shortened form that also exists before a consonant, like un.

The apostrophe also marks a shortened word: un po' (from poco), and the imperatives di' (dire), fa', va', da', sta'.

  • C'è un'altra sedia in cucina? — Is there another chair in the kitchen?

The trap: a bit is written un po', with an apostrophe, never un pò with an accent.
