Aspect: two verbs for one action
Polish verbs come in pairs, an imperfective for an action in progress or repeated and a perfective for one finished action: robić and zrobić, kupować and kupić, mówić and powiedzieć. The past of the perfectives, napisała, otworzył, zobaczyłam, and the hard forms wziął, zaczęła, poszedł.
In many pairs the perfective is formed by adding a prefix to the imperfective: robić → zrobić, pisać → napisać, czytać → przeczytać, pić → wypić, jechać → pojechać, jeść → zjeść, iść → pójść. The prefix cannot be guessed and is learnt with each verb (napisać, never zpisać).
The past of the perfective is formed like the past of robić: zrobiłam, zrobiłeś, zrobił; napisał, napisała; przeczytał, przeczytałyśmy; wypił; wypiły (dzieci takes the -ły form); pojechałaś; pojechali (a man and a woman together take the -li form).
Ania długo pisała ten list, ale wczoraj go napisała. Kiedy zrobiłeś to zdjęcie?
The English speaker's trap: Polish has no separate tense for I have done. Have you done the shopping? is Zrobiłeś zakupy?, the past of the perfective verb.

In other pairs the two verbs differ in the stem or the ending: kupować / kupić, dawać / dać, zaczynać / zacząć, spotykać się / spotkać się, otwierać / otworzyć. The imperfective verbs have a regular present: kupuję, daję, zaczyna, spotykam się, otwiera.
The past of these perfectives: kupiłem, kupił, kupiły; dałeś; otworzyła, otworzył (kto takes the masculine form); spotkała się, spotkałaś się, with się after the verb. The past of zacząć is irregular and is shown in the part « The past of the hard perfectives: wziął, zaczął, poszedł ».

A few common pairs are made of two different verbs: brać / wziąć, mówić / powiedzieć, widzieć / zobaczyć, kłaść / położyć. The perfective partner has to be learnt as a word of its own: the perfective of widzieć is zobaczyć, never zwidzieć.
The present of the imperfectives: biorę, bierzesz, bierze; kładę, kładziesz, kładzie. The past of the perfectives is regular: powiedziałaś, powiedział, powiedziała; zobaczył, zobaczyła, zobaczyliśmy, zobaczyły; położyła, położyłeś. In wziąć and zacząć the stem has -ą- in the masculine singular forms (wziąłem, wziąłeś, wziął; zacząłem, zaczął) and -ę- in all the other forms: wzięła, wzięli; zaczęła, zaczęły.
