Most Polish verbs come in pairs that share one meaning. The imperfective verb presents an action in progress, repeated or seen as a process (czytać, “to read, to be reading”); the perfective verb presents one action done and finished (przeczytać, “to read to the end”). At A1 each pair is learnt as two words of one entry, czytać / przeczytać, with the perfective past and the simple future.

Aspect: imperfective and perfective pairs, learnt as words#

Formation

A perfective verb is formed from its imperfective partner in one of three ways, and each pair is learnt with the verb:

Kind of pairImperfectivePerfective
a prefixrobić, pisać, czytać, pić, jeść, iść, jechaćzrobić, napisać, przeczytać, wypić, zjeść, pójść, pojechać
a changed stemkupować, dawać, zaczynać, spotykać się, otwieraćkupić, dać, zacząć, spotkać się, otworzyć
two different verbsbrać, mówić, widzieć, kłaśćwziąć, powiedzieć, zobaczyć, położyć

Use

The prefix cannot be guessed: napisać, przeczytać, zrobić, wypić. The past of a perfective verb is formed as any past: zrobiłem, napisała, kupili. A perfective verb has no present: its conjugated form refers to the future (zrobię, “I’ll do it”), as explained in The simple future of perfective verbs: zrobię, pójdę, wezmę. What is known at A1: the pairs as words, the past of both verbs (robiłem or zrobiłem) and the two futures (będę robić or zrobię); the choice between the two aspects in every tense is taken further at the next level.

  • Długo pisałam ten list, ale wczoraj go napisałam.I was writing this letter for a long time, but I finished it yesterday.
  • Kto otworzył okno?Who opened the window?
  • Wczoraj zobaczyłem Ewę w parku.I saw Ewa in the park yesterday.
  • Tomek wypił kawę i poszedł do pracy.Tomek drank his coffee and went to work.
  • Anna powiedziała, że przyjdzie jutro.Anna said she would come tomorrow.

Difference from English

In English, “I read”, “I was reading” and “I have read” are distinguished by tenses; in Polish an action in progress or repeated and an action finished are expressed by two verbs. The English simple past can be either: “I read a book yesterday” is czytałem (I spent time reading) or przeczytałem (I finished it).

Common mistakes

  • Zwidziałem Ewę wczoraj. → Zobaczyłem Ewę wczoraj. The perfective partner of widzieć is zobaczyć.
  • Zpisałem list. → Napisałem list. The perfective of pisać is napisać.

The past of perfective verbs with hard forms: wziął, zaczął, poszedł, zjadł#

Formation

Wziąć and zacząć have -ął in the masculine singular and -ęł- in every other form: wziął, wzięła, wzięli, wzięły; zaczął, zaczęła, zaczęli, zaczęły. Pójść and zjeść have the past of iść and jeść with their prefix: poszedł, poszła, poszli; zjadł, zjadła, zjedli.

Use

The personal endings are added as for every verb: wziąłem, wzięłam, poszedłeś, poszłaś, zjadłem. These perfectives are frequent in a story: Wziął kurtkę i poszedł.

  • Ania wzięła torbę i poszła do pracy.Ania took her bag and went to work.
  • Lekcja zaczęła się o ósmej. The lesson started at eight.
  • Kto zjadł moją kanapkę?Who ate my sandwich?
  • Wczoraj poszedłem spać wcześnie.I went to bed early yesterday.

Difference from English

English “took” and “went” have one form for every person; in Polish the vowel itself changes with the gender: wziął, wzięła.

Common mistakes

  • Ewa wziąła taksówkę. → Ewa wzięła taksówkę.Every form but wziął has ę.
  • Marek poszł do domu. → Marek poszedł do domu. The masculine singular of pójść is poszedł.
