Numbers and time: ordinals, the clock, days and months
Ordinal numbers that agree with their noun (pierwszy dzień, druga lekcja, trzecie mieszkanie, dwudziesty pierwszy), the time of day (Która godzina? Jest trzecia. O której? O ósmej), the days of the week (w środę, we wtorek, wieczorem) and the months (w maju, w lutym, we wrześniu).
An ordinal number takes the endings of an adjective: -y or -i with a masculine noun, -a with a feminine noun, -e with a neuter noun and in the plural (except for groups of men). Trzeci takes soft endings: trzecia, trzecie. Jego pierwsza szkoła (his first school): szkoła is feminine, so pierwsza, not pierwszy.
| masculine | feminine | neuter, plural | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | pierwszy | pierwsza | pierwsze |
| 2 | drugi | druga | drugie |
| 3 | trzeci | trzecia | trzecie |
| 4 | czwarty | czwarta | czwarte |
The masculine forms go on: piąty, szósty, siódmy, ósmy, dziewiąty, dziesiąty (feminine dziesiąta), jedenasty, dwunasty, trzynasty… dwudziesty. Piątek (Friday) comes from piąty: the Polish week starts on Monday. Mój pierwszy dzień w pracy (my first day at work); Drugie okno jest otwarte (the second window is open).
English changes only the last word of twenty-first. In Polish both words of a compound ordinal are ordinals and both agree: dwudziesty pierwszy, dwudziesta druga, dwudzieste czwarte urodziny (urodziny is plural). For the date, Dzisiaj jest dwudziesty pierwszy is also heard as dwudziestego pierwszego.

The question Która godzina? (or Która jest godzina?) is answered with a feminine ordinal, agreeing with the word godzina, which is left out: Jest druga (it's two o'clock). The question O której? (at what time?) is answered with o and the ending -ej: O ósmej (at eight). The same -ej form follows od (from) and do (until): od siódmej do trzeciej. English gives the hour as a plain number (three o'clock); Polish says trzecia, not trzy, and o piątej, not o pięć. In the 24-hour clock both words of a compound hour change: o dwudziestej pierwszej (at 9 p.m.).
| hour | Jest… | O… |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | pierwsza | o pierwszej |
| 2 | druga | o drugiej |
| 3 | trzecia | o trzeciej |
| 4 | czwarta | o czwartej |
| 5 | piąta | o piątej |
| 6 | szósta | o szóstej |
| 7 | siódma | o siódmej |
| 8 | ósma | o ósmej |
| 9 | dziewiąta | o dziewiątej |
| 10 | dziesiąta | o dziesiątej |
| 11 | jedenasta | o jedenastej |
| 12 | dwunasta | o dwunastej |
Jest czwarta, lekcja jest o piątej (it's four o'clock, the lesson is at five).

On Monday is said with w and the accusative. A feminine day changes -a to -ę: w środę, w sobotę, w niedzielę. A masculine day does not change: w poniedziałek, w czwartek, w piątek. Before wtorek, w becomes we, which is easier to say: we wtorek. English on is not translated with na: w sobotę, not na sobota.
Rano (in the morning) and wieczorem (in the evening, from wieczór) are single words used without a preposition; po południu (in the afternoon) and w nocy (at night) are set phrases. All of them can follow a day: W piątek wieczorem jestem w domu (on Friday evening I'm at home).
