A Hungarian verb has two sets of personal endings. The indefinite conjugation is used when the verb has no object or an indefinite one, the definite conjugation when the object is a particular, known person or thing.

The definite conjugation: tudom, várom, kérem#

Formation

The definite endings follow vowel harmony: -om, -od, -ja, -juk, -játok, -ják after a back-vowel stem, and -em, -ed, -i, -jük, -itek, -ik after a front-vowel stem; a stem whose last vowel is front rounded takes -öm, -öd for én and te: küldöm, küldöd. After s, sz and z, the j of an ending becomes that consonant, which is written twice: olvas → olvassa, olvassuk; néz → nézzük.

Use

The definite conjugation is used when the object is definite: a noun with a or az, a name, ezt or azt, or a noun with a possessive ending. The indefinite conjugation is used with no object, or with an indefinite one: a bare noun, a noun with egy, a number, mit?, kit?, valamit, semmit. Without a stated object, a definite form means “it”: Tudom (“I know it”, “I know”), Nem tudom (“I don’t know”).

Difference from English

English has one verb form in “I see a bus” and “I see the bus”. Hungarian changes the ending of the verb with the article of the object: látok egy buszt, látom a buszt. The plural shows the difference too: kértek (“you ask for”, indefinite) and kéritek (definite), kérnek and kérik.

Common mistakes

  • Látok a buszt. → Látom a buszt. An object with a takes the definite conjugation.
  • Kérem egy kávét. → Kérek egy kávét.An object with egy takes the indefinite conjugation.
  • Ti kértek a jegyet? → Ti kéritek a jegyet?A definite object takes the definite ending in the plural too.

Remember

A, az, a name, ezt, azt: the definite conjugation. Egy, no article, a number, mit, kit: the indefinite conjugation.
