At what time: -kor#

Formation

The ending -kor (at) is added to a number to give the hour: hat → hatkor (at six), hét → hétkor, tizenegy → tizenegykor. It has one form, with no vowel harmony. The number may also stand before órakor: hat órakor. The question is hány órakor? (at what time?), or mikor? (when?).

  • Hétkor reggelizem.I have breakfast at seven.
  • Az óra kilenckor kezdődik. The lesson starts at nine.
  • Hány órakor jön a vonat? – Tízkor. What time is the train coming? – At ten.

Difference from English

English at seven has a preposition before the number; Hungarian has an ending after it: hétkor.

Common mistakes

  • nyolcban → nyolckorThe hour takes -kor.
  • Mikor órakor? → Hány órakor? At what time? is hány órakor.

Telling the time: fél, negyed, háromnegyed#

Formation

What time is it? is Hány óra van?. On the hour, the time is the number with óra: Hat óra van (“It’s six o’clock”). The half and the quarters are counted towards the next hour: negyed hét (a quarter of the seventh hour) is 6:15, fél hét (half of the seventh hour) is 6:30, háromnegyed hét is 6:45. -Kor is added to the last word: fél hétkor (at half past six).

6:00hat órahatkor, hat órakor
