Words and sentences are joined with și (and), sau (or) and dar (but); repeated, și … și, nici … nici and sau … sau express “both … and”, “neither … nor” and “either … or”. What is said, thought or known is introduced by că, a reason by pentru că and a condition by dacă.
Joining words and sentences: și, sau, dar; și … și, nici … nici#
Formation
Și joins two words or two sentences, like English “and”; sau (also ori) offers a choice; dar (also însă) introduces a contrast and is preceded by a comma. No comma is placed before și. Repeated, și … și means “both … and”, sau … sau “either … or” and nici … nici “neither … nor”, with a comma before the second word: și Ana, și Tom. Nici … nici is used with nu before the verb.
Use
Two subjects joined by și take the verb in the plural; with eu among them, the verb is in the first person plural (eu și Ana suntem), with tu, in the second person plural (tu și Mihai sunteți). The short answers are Și eu! (“Me too!”) after an affirmative sentence and Nici eu. (“Me neither.”) after a negative one; after îmi place, they take the dative: Și mie!, Nici mie. Că, pentru că and dacă are explained in “Saying what, why and if: că, să, ca să, pentru că, dacă”.

Difference from English
English “neither … nor” contains no “not”, but the Romanian sentence needs nu: Nu am nici timp, nici bani. English “you and Mihai are” gives no sign of the person; in Romanian, tu și Mihai takes the voi form, sunteți.
Common mistakes
Am nici timp, nici bani.→ Nu am nici timp, nici bani.Nici … nici is used with nu.Eu și Ana sunt din Cluj.→ Eu și Ana suntem din Cluj. With eu among the subjects, the verb is in the first person plural.
