1. Forming it: hatte or war + participle

The Plusquamperfekt is formed with the Präteritum of haben or sein and the participle (Partizip II), which is placed at the end of the clause. haben gives ich hatte, du hattest, er hatte, wir hatten, ihr hattet, sie hatten; sein gives ich war, du warst, er war, wir waren, ihr wart, sie waren.

The auxiliary is the one the verb takes in the Perfekt. Verbs of movement from one place to another (gehen, fahren, fliegen, kommen, ankommen), verbs of a change of state (aufstehen), and sein and bleiben take war: er war gegangen, wir waren gefahren, du warst gekommen, ihr wart angekommen, sie war aufgestanden, sie war geflogen, Sie waren gewesen. All other verbs take hatte: ich hatte gemacht, ihr hattet gelesen, er hatte gefunden, er hatte gelebt, ihr hattet eingeladen, ich hatte getrunken.

Wir hatten den Film schon zweimal gesehen.

English uses had with every verb, but she had come is sie war gekommen, never sie hatte gekommen.

2. What had happened before

The Plusquamperfekt expresses an event that came before another event in the past. The later event is told in the Präteritum, the earlier one in the Plusquamperfekt, often with schon or noch nie: sie hatte gelesen, sie hatten gegessen, er hatte gelassen, der Zug war abgefahren, es war gefallen, wir waren gefahren.

Das Kino war voll, weil viele Leute schon Karten gekauft hatten.

3. Perfekt or Plusquamperfekt?

The Perfekt tells a past event in conversation, seen from the present: Gestern habe ich im Garten gearbeitet, Hast du Lena gesehen?, Bist du zu Fuß gekommen?, Mein Bruder hat gekocht. The Plusquamperfekt is used for an event that came before another past event, often in a clause with weil or denn: ich hatte, sie war, wir waren and the participle, die Kinder waren geblieben. After weil, the auxiliary is placed last, after the participle: weil er lange gewartet hatte. The choice between hatte and war follows the Perfekt: ist gefahren gives war gefahren.

Paul konnte nicht bezahlen, weil er sein Geld zu Hause gelassen hatte.

English often uses the simple past for the earlier event too (we were late because we missed the bus), but German puts it in the Plusquamperfekt: weil wir den Bus verpasst hatten. A Perfekt for the earlier of two past events is a mistake: Wir hatten keinen Hunger, denn wir haben schon gegessen is Wir hatten keinen Hunger, denn wir hatten schon gegessen.

4. After and before: nachdem, bevor

After nachdem (after), the verb is placed at the end. After a main clause in the Präteritum, the nachdem clause is in the Plusquamperfekt: nachdem er gegessen hatte, nachdem sie die Arbeit gemacht hatte, nachdem der Bus abgefahren war, nachdem sie aufgestanden war. bevor (before) usually takes the tense of the main clause: Bevor wir nach Rom flogen, packten wir.

English often has the simple past after after (after the train left); the German is nachdem der Zug abgefahren war.

5. When in the past: als or wenn

English when has three equivalents. als is used for one event or one period in the past. wenn is used for something repeated, often with immer or jedes Mal: Immer wenn Oma kam, …. wann is used in questions, direct or indirect. After als and wenn, the verb is placed at the end: Als das Spiel begann, …, Als sie die Zeitung las, ….

Wenn wir Oma besuchten, gab es immer Kuchen.

wenn for one past event is a mistake: when we arrived yesterday is als wir gestern ankamen.

6. While, since, until: während, seitdem, bis

während (while) links two actions at the same time: Während Max kochte, sah Lena fern, während die Kinder schliefen, während wir warteten. After seit or seitdem (since), a situation still going on is in the present: seit sie in Hamburg wohnen, seitdem Anna ein Fahrrad hat. bis (until) marks the end point: bis der Zug kam. sobald (as soon as) introduces what happens first, solange (as long as) a situation that lasts as long as the other one: sobald ich nach Hause kam, sobald ich ankomme, solange es regnet. In all these clauses the verb is placed at the end.

Seitdem Paul in Wien arbeitet, geht er oft ins Theater.

Since I have lived here is seit ich hier wohne, in the present.

7. Time words: damals, inzwischen, vorher, schließlich

damals means at that time, inzwischen meanwhile, vorher (or zuvor, davor) before that, schließlich in the end. At the start of a sentence, they are followed by the verb: Damals fuhren wir oft nach Italien, Inzwischen wurde es kalt, Vorher aßen wir zu Hause, Schließlich nahmen wir den Bus.

Wir warteten lange. Schließlich kam der Bus.

Then meaning at that time is damals; dann means after that. In English the subject comes first (in the end the bus came), in German the verb.

8. Telling a story in the past: mixed practice

The forms and the use of the Plusquamperfekt (wart angekommen, hatte gesungen, waren gewesen) are mixed with the Perfekt, the conjunctions of time (nachdem, bevor, als, wenn, während, seitdem, bis) and the time words of a story. After als and während, the Präteritum of the story is placed at the end (als er aufwachte, während sie arbeitete); after seitdem, what is still true is in the present (seitdem er dort studiert).
