Saying how big a difference is: bien plus, un peu plus, de loin le plus#

A comparative is strengthened with bien, beaucoup or nettement, and a superlative with de loin.

  • Le train est bien plus confortable que le bus.The train is much more comfortable than the bus.
  • Ce quartier est nettement moins cher que le centre. This area is a good deal cheaper than the centre.
  • Paris est de loin la plus grande ville de France.Paris is by far the largest city in France.
  • Mon nouveau travail est beaucoup plus intéressant. My new job is much more interesting.

Formation

  • A comparative (plus, moins, meilleur, mieux) is strengthened with bien, beaucoup or nettement (“much”, “far”, “clearly”): bien plus cher.
  • A small difference is expressed with un peu or légèrement: un peu plus tard, légèrement moins cher.
  • A superlative is strengthened with de loin (“by far”), placed before it: de loin le plus grand.
MeaningFormExample
much more, much lessbien, beaucoup, nettement + plus, moinsC’est bien plus rapide en train.
much betterbien, nettement meilleurCe vin est nettement meilleur.
a littleun peu, légèrement + comparativeun peu plus tard, légèrement moins cher
by farde loin + superlativeC’est de loin la meilleure solution.

*Bien* or *beaucoup*

  • Beaucoup is placed before plus and moins, and also with a noun: beaucoup moins long, beaucoup plus de temps.
  • Before meilleur, bien and nettement are the usual choice: bien meilleur.

Difference from English

  • English “much” and “far” before a comparative are bien, beaucoup or nettement: bien plus grand, nettement meilleur.

Common mistakes

  • C’est très plus cher. → C’est bien plus cher.Très is not used with a comparative.
  • C’est par loin le meilleur. → C’est de loin le meilleur.“By far” is de loin.

Remember

  • Use bien, beaucoup or nettement before plus and moins: C’est bien plus cher. (“It’s much more expensive.”)
  • Use un peu or légèrement for a small difference: C’est un peu plus loin. (“It’s a little further.”)
  • Use de loin before a superlative: C’est de loin le meilleur. (“It’s by far the best.”)

You now know how to say that a difference is big or small, and how to strengthen a superlative.

Saying how something is done: de manière, de façon, avec, sans#

De manière or de façon + a feminine adjective, and avec or sans + a noun with no article, express manner.

  • Il a expliqué le problème de manière simple. He explained the problem simply.
  • Elle range ses affaires avec soin. She puts her things away carefully.
  • Nous avons trouvé la maison sans difficulté.We found the house without difficulty.

Formation

  • De manière or de façon + adjective expresses the manner, like an adverb in -ment: de manière claire, de façon originale.
  • The adjective agrees with manière or façon, both feminine: de façon polie.
  • Avec + a noun with no article states the manner: avec soin (“carefully”).
  • Sans + a noun with no article states what is missing: sans difficulté (“easily”).

Use

  • De manière and de façon are used above all when the adjective has no adverb in -ment. They are also used instead of a long adverb in -ment.

Difference from English

  • English “in a clear way” has an article, and French de manière claire has none. French d’une manière claire, with an article, is also correct.
  • An English adverb in “-ly” is most often an adverb in -ment, and sometimes avec + noun: avec soin (“carefully”).

Common mistakes

  • de façon poli → de façon polieThe adjective agrees with façon, which is feminine.
  • avec la patience → avec patienceAfter avec expressing manner, the noun has no article.

Remember

  • Make the adjective feminine after de manière and de façon: Il parle de façon claire. (“He speaks clearly.”)
  • Use no article after avec and sans for a manner: Elle travaille avec soin. (“She works carefully.”)
