Inside, around, along: innerhalb, außerhalb, um … herum, entlang#

Formation

Innerhalb (“inside, within”) and außerhalb (“outside”) take the genitive, for a place or a time: innerhalb der Stadt, außerhalb der Öffnungszeiten. Before a noun with no article, such as a number of days, innerhalb von with the dative is used: innerhalb von zwei Wochen. Um … herum (“around”) takes the accusative: um stands before the noun and herum after it: um die Stadt herum. Entlang (“along”) is placed after the noun, which is in the accusative: die Straße entlang. With an before the noun, the noun is in the dative: am Fluss entlang, an der Mauer entlang.

  • Bitte zahlen Sie innerhalb einer Woche. Please pay within a week.
  • Der Bauernhof liegt außerhalb des Dorfes. The farm is outside the village.
  • Innerhalb von drei Tagen war alles fertig.Within three days everything was ready.
  • Die Kinder liefen um das Haus herum. The children ran around the house.
  • Gehen Sie diese Straße entlang bis zur Kirche.Go along this street as far as the church.

Difference from English

English along and around stand before the noun; German entlang and herum follow it: den Fluss entlang, um das Haus herum.

Common mistakes

  • Wir gehen entlang die Straße. → Wir gehen die Straße entlang.Entlang is placed after the noun.
  • außerhalb die Schule → außerhalb der SchuleAußerhalb takes the genitive.

Place and direction: wo? and wohin?

The two-way prepositions met at A1 and A2 take the dative for a place (wo?) and the accusative for a direction (wohin?). The verbs of position, liegen, stehen and sitzen, are used with the dative; the verbs of movement, legen, stellen and sich setzen, with the accusative. Hängen is used for both: Das Bild hängt an der Wand, but Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand.

With a verb of movement, hin points away from the speaker and her towards the speaker: hinein and herein (“in”), hinaus and heraus (“out”). Komm herein! is said from inside, Geh hinaus! by someone who stays inside. Dorthin (“there”) answers wohin?: Wir fahren morgen dorthin.

  • Der Schlüssel liegt auf dem Schrank. The key is on top of the cupboard.
  • Leg den Schlüssel bitte auf den Schrank.Put the key on the cupboard, please.
  • Wir hängen die Lampe über den Tisch. We're hanging the lamp above the table.

Common mistake

  • Ich lege das Buch auf dem Tisch. → Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch.Legen expresses a movement: accusative.

Prepositions of time: vor, seit, in, nach

With a time, the prepositions vor, seit, in and nach take the dative. Vor with a length of time means “ago”; seit (“for, since”) expresses a time that is not over, with the verb in the present; in with a length of time places an event in the future; nach means “after”.

PrepositionMeaningExample
voragovor zwei Jahren
seitfor, since (still going on)seit einer Woche
inin (future)in zehn Minuten
nachafternach der Arbeit
  • Wir sind vor einem Monat umgezogen. We moved house a month ago.
  • Das Konzert beginnt in zwanzig Minuten. The concert starts in twenty minutes.
  • Ich lerne seit drei Monaten Deutsch.I've been learning German for three months.

Difference from English

English ago follows the length of time; German vor comes before it: vor drei Tagen. The noun after these prepositions is in the dative, so a plural takes -n: vor drei Jahren, in zwei Tagen.

Common mistake

  • Ich war drei Jahre vor in Rom. → Ich war vor drei Jahren in Rom.Vor stands before the length of time, which is in the dative.
