The Slovak future has three shapes: the future of byť (budem), the same forms followed by an infinitive (budem pracovať), and the one-word forms of a few verbs (pôjdem, prídem). The present also states a plan when a time word shows that it lies ahead.

The future: budem, budem pracovať, pôjdem, prídem#

Formation

The future of byť is budem, budeš, bude, budeme, budete, budú. Followed by an infinitive, the same forms make the future of an imperfective verb: budem pracovať, budeš čítať, budú variť; the auxiliary agrees with the subject and the infinitive never changes. Ísť has a one-word future, on the stem pôjd-: pôjdem, pôjdeš, pôjde, pôjdeme, pôjdete, pôjdu. The present forms of a perfective verb, such as prísť (prídem), stretnúť sa (stretnem sa), pozvať (pozvem) and dať si (dám si), refer to the future. The negative is formed with ne- written together with the form of byť: nebudem, nebudem pracovať.

Use

Budem alone is used where English has will be: Zajtra budem doma. Budem with an infinitive says what someone will do: V sobotu budeme upratovať. Ísť takes pôjdem, and prísť takes prídem, never budem with the infinitive. With a time word, the present of ísť also states a plan: Zajtra idem na koncert and Zajtra pôjdem na koncert both say what is planned. Sa comes second, before the auxiliary in the third person: Hana sa bude učiť, but Budem sa učiť. The time words zajtra, budúci týždeň and večer need no preposition; the days take v and the accusative: v sobotu.

  • Zajtra budem doma celý deň.Tomorrow I’ll be at home all day.
  • V sobotu budeme upratovať byt.On Saturday we’ll clean the flat.
  • Kedy pôjdete na Slovensko? When will you go to Slovakia?
  • Ondrej príde o siedmej.Ondrej will come at seven.
  • Dnes nebudem variť, dáme si pizzu.I won’t cook today, we’ll have a pizza.
  • Budúci týždeň bude Kristína v Bratislave.Next week Kristína will be in Bratislava.

Difference from English

English will is a separate word before every verb; in Slovak will be is one word, budem, I will work is budem pracovať, and I will go is pôjdem, with no auxiliary.

Common mistakes

  • Budem pracujem. → Budem pracovať.After budem, the verb is in the infinitive.
  • Budem ísť do kina. → Pôjdem do kina.Ísť has the future pôjdem.
  • Ne budem doma. → Nebudem doma.Ne- is written together with budem.
  • Budem prísť zajtra. → Prídem zajtra. The forms of prísť already refer to the future.
