A Swedish adjective agrees with its noun in gender and number, both after är and before the noun. A comparative is formed with -are, followed by än.
Adjective agreement: stor, stort, stora#
Formation
In the indefinite form an adjective has three forms: the basic form with an en-word, -t added with an ett-word, and -a added with a plural noun.
| en-word | ett-word | plural | |
|---|---|---|---|
| big | stor | stort | stora |
| cheap | billig | billigt | billiga |
| nice | trevlig | trevligt | trevliga |
| warm | varm | varmt | varma |
| kind | snäll | snällt | snälla |
Use
The adjective agrees with the noun it describes, whether it stands after är (Bilen är stor, Huset är stort, Bilarna är stora) or before the noun, after en or ett or with no article (en stor bil, ett stort hus, stora bilar). An uncountable noun with no article takes the adjective of its gender: varmt vatten (ett-word), varm mjölk (en-word). The forms of an adjective after a definite article (den stora bilen) are not part of A1.
- Lägenheten är stor. The flat is big.
- Rummet är varmt. The room is warm.
- Skorna är billiga. The shoes are cheap.
- Vi har en snäll hund.We have a kind dog.
- Det är ett trevligt kafé.It’s a nice café.
- Barnen vill ha kallt vatten. The children want cold water.
Difference from English
English adjectives never change: “a big car”, “a big house”, “big cars”. Swedish adjectives take -t with an ett-word and -a in the plural, also after är: Huset är stort.
Common mistakes
ett stor hus→ ett stort husWith an ett-word the adjective takes -t.Bilarna är stor.→ Bilarna är stora. After är the adjective agrees with a plural subject.
Remember
-t for an ett-word, -a for a plural: stor, stort, stora.

Born, married, closed: född, gift, stängd#
Use
A few participles are used as adjectives after är, in set phrases: född (born), gift (married) and stängd (closed). They agree like other adjectives: Affären är stängd, Museet är stängt, Bankerna är stängda; Han är gift, De är gifta. Where English says “I was born”, Swedish says jag är född, in the present, for a person still living. The participle as a verb form is not part of A1.
| en-word | ett-word | plural | |
|---|---|---|---|
| closed | stängd | stängt | stängda |
| married | gift | gift | gifta |
- Min mamma är född i Kina.My mother was born in China.
- Är du gift? – Nej, det är jag inte. Are you married? – No, I’m not.
- Banken är stängd på söndag. The bank is closed on Sunday.
- Kaféet är stängt i dag.The café is closed today.
Difference from English
English “I was born” is in the past; Swedish uses the present, jag är född. English “married” and “closed” never change; Swedish gift takes -a in the plural and stängd has stängt and stängda.
Common mistakes
Min bror var född i Lund.→ Min bror är född i Lund.A living person’s birth is stated with är född.Museet är stängd.→ Museet är stängt.Museum is an ett-word.

Adjectives with special forms: nytt, rött, svart, bra, gratis#
Formation
A few groups of adjectives have a special neuter form. An adjective ending in a stressed vowel takes -tt: ny, nytt; blå, blått; grå, grått. An adjective ending in a long vowel and -d or -t takes -tt in place of the -d or -t: röd, rött; vit, vitt. An adjective already ending in a consonant and -t takes no further -t: svart, svart; trött, trött. A few adjectives never change: bra (good), gratis (free of charge).
| en-word | ett-word | plural |
|---|---|---|
| ny | nytt | nya |
| röd | rött | röda |
| vit | vitt | vita |
| blå | blått | blå or blåa |
| svart | svart | svarta |
| trött | trött | trötta |
| bra | bra | bra |

- Det är ett svart hus. It’s a black house.
- Barnen är trötta. The children are tired.

Comparing two things: billigare än, bättre, mer, mindre#
Formation
The comparative is formed by adding -are to the basic form of the adjective: billig, billigare; dyr, dyrare; varm, varmare. The second term of the comparison is introduced by än (than). The comparative has the same form with an en-word, an ett-word and a plural. Bra has the irregular comparative bättre.
| Adjective | Comparative |
|---|---|
| billig (cheap) | billigare |
| dyr (expensive) | dyrare |
| snabb (fast) | snabbare |
| varm (warm) | varmare |
| rolig (fun) | roligare |
| bra (good) | bättre |
Use
Mer (more) and mindre (less) are used before a noun, followed by än: Erik dricker mer kaffe än jag. The full comparison, with the superlative and the other irregular adjectives, is not part of A1.
- Ett flygplan är snabbare än ett tåg.A plane is faster than a train.

- Te är bättre än kaffe.Tea is better than coffee.
- Hon har mer pengar än jag.She has more money than I do.

Difference from English

Common mistakes
mer dyr→ dyrareA common adjective takes -are.bra-are→ bättreBra has an irregular comparative.Bussen är långsammare som tåget.→ Bussen är långsammare än tåget.“Than” is än.
