L’un l’altro, da solo: each other, by myself, on my own#
Uso
Each other esprime un’azione reciproca: ciascuno compie l’azione sull’altro. One another ha lo stesso significato di each other.
| Frase | Significato |
|---|---|
| They looked at themselves in the mirror. | ciascuno ha guardato sé stesso |
| They looked at each other in the mirror. | ciascuno ha guardato l’altro nello specchio |
Each other si scrive in due parole, senza trattino e senza -s. Davanti a un nome prende il genitivo sassone: each other’s.
- Tom and Lucy have known each other since they were children.
- My neighbours and I often help each other.I miei vicini e io ci aiutiamo spesso.
- The two brothers often wear each other’s clothes.I due fratelli si mettono spesso i vestiti l’uno dell’altro.
- Help yourselves to some cake!Prendete pure un po’ di torta!
Alcuni verbi reciproci italiani si traducono senza pronome: « incontrarsi » → meet, « sposarsi » → get married, « baciarsi » → kiss.
Da solo: by myself, on my own. « Da solo », nel senso di « senza nessuno » o « senza aiuto », si dice by + pronome riflessivo, oppure on + aggettivo possessivo + own. Il pronome e il possessivo concordano con il soggetto: by myself, on my own; by herself, on her own; by themselves, on their own.
- My son can dress by himself now.Ora mio figlio sa vestirsi da solo.
- Do you live on your own?
L’inglese distingue sempre themselves da each other. « Ci conosciamo » si dice We know each other, e non We know us né We know ourselves.
Errori frequenti
They love themselves very much.→ They love each other very much.L’azione reciproca si esprime con each other. We met us in Rome.→ We met in Rome. She did it by her.→ She did it by herself. / She did it on her own.

L’altro, gli altri: the other, others#
Uso
Davanti a un nome other è un determinante invariabile: the other students.
| Forma | Uso | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| the other + nome singolare | il secondo di due | the other shoe |
| the other one | il secondo di due, senza il nome | This one is mine; the other one is yours. |
| other + nome plurale | altri | other countries |
| the other + nome plurale | gli altri | the other children |
| others | altri, senza il nome | Some people like it; others don’t. |
| the others | gli altri, senza il nome | The others are waiting outside. |
- I’ve found one sock, but where’s the other one?
- Two of my friends came, but the others stayed at home.
- Some students walk to school; others come by bus.Alcuni studenti vanno a scuola a piedi; altri vengono in autobus.
Another (« un altro », « ancora un ») si scrive in una parola sola e si usa davanti a un nome singolare: another coffee.
Differenza con l’italiano
« Altro » concorda in italiano con il nome (« gli altri ragazzi », « le altre ragazze »); other resta invariabile davanti a un nome: the other boys, the other girls, e non the others boys. « Un altro » si scrive in una parola sola: another.
Errori frequenti
the others girls→ the other girlsCan I have an other coffee?→ Can I have another coffee?

Entrambi: both, both of, both … and#
Formazione
Both (« entrambi », « tutti e due ») si colloca davanti a un nome plurale, oppure davanti a un determinante seguito da un nome: both my sisters o both of my sisters. Davanti a un pronome si usa both of + pronome complemento: both of us, both of them. Dopo un pronome soggetto, both si colloca davanti al verbo ordinario, ma dopo be e dopo l’ausiliare. Both … and unisce due elementi: « sia … sia », « sia … che ».
- Both my grandparents are from Wales.I miei nonni sono gallesi tutti e due.
- Both of them were tired.Erano stanchi tutti e due.
- We both like Italian food.
- They are both from Glasgow.Sono entrambi di Glasgow.
- This phone is both cheap and fast.Questo telefono è sia economico sia veloce.
In una risposta breve both si usa da solo: Tea or coffee? — Both, please. Both indica due elementi; per tre o più si usa all.
Differenza con l’italiano
« Entrambi » e « tutti e due » si dicono both, e non all the two né the both: They both play the piano. L’articolo italiano (« entrambi i fratelli ») non si traduce: both brothers o both the brothers. « Sia… sia » e « sia… che » si dicono both … and.
Errori frequenti
The both brothers came.→ Both brothers came. / Both the brothers came. Both of we are tired.→ Both of us are tired.Dopo both of si usa il pronome complemento. They both are teachers.→ They are both teachers.Dopo be, both si colloca dopo il verbo.

Differenza con l’italiano
« Qualunque cosa », « chiunque » e « dovunque » sono seguiti dal congiuntivo in italiano (« qualunque cosa succeda », « dovunque tu vada »); whatever, whoever e wherever sono seguiti dall’indicativo: whatever happens, wherever you go.
