Quando, appena: when, as soon as + presente#
Formazione
- We’ll have dinner when Dad gets back.Ceneremo quando tornerà papà.
- As soon as I get the results, I’ll let you know.Appena avrò i risultati, ti farò sapere.
- Please wait here until the doctor comes.
- You can watch TV after you’ve done your homework.
Il verbo della proposizione temporale si coniuga come ogni present simple: when she arrives, as soon as he finishes. La proposizione principale può essere anche all’imperativo: Text me when you’re on the train.
Be going to esprime un progetto deciso (We’re going to buy a flat) o una previsione basata su ciò che si vede (Look, it’s going to rain).
L’inglese usa il present simple: when you’re ready, as soon as he arrives, e non when you will be ready.
Errori frequenti
I’ll tell him when he will arrive.→ I’ll tell him when he arrives. As soon as I will know, I’ll call you.→ As soon as I know, I’ll call you. We’ll wait until she come.→ We’ll wait until she comes. Wait here until the doctor doesn’t come.→ Wait here until the doctor comes.

Il future continuous: will be + -ing#
Formazione
Il future continuous si forma con will be, seguito dal verbo in -ing, a tutte le persone. Nella lingua parlata will si contrae in ’ll. La forma negativa è won’t be + -ing; nella forma interrogativa will si colloca davanti al soggetto.
| work | |
|---|---|
| I | will be working |
| you | will be working |
| he/she/it | will be working |
| we | will be working |
| you (plural) | will be working |
| they | will be working |
| Affermativa | Negativa | Interrogativa | Risposta breve |
|---|---|---|---|
| I’ll be working. | I won’t be working. | Will you be working? | Yes, I will. / No, I won’t. |
| She’ll be sleeping. | She won’t be sleeping. | Will she be sleeping? | Yes, she will. / No, she won’t. |
Uso
Will you be using the car tonight?
- This time tomorrow, I’ll be swimming in the sea.Domani a quest’ora starò nuotando nel mare.
- At nine o’clock, we’ll be having dinner.Alle nove staremo cenando.
- I won’t be working tomorrow, so we can meet.Domani non lavoro, quindi possiamo vederci.
- Will you be staying at the hotel all week?Resterete in albergo tutta la settimana?
Il future continuous si distingue da will + forma base come il past continuous si distingue dal past simple: At eight, I’ll be cooking (alle otto starò cucinando); At eight, I’ll cook (alle otto mi metterò a cucinare). La forma in -ing segue l’ortografia del present continuous: get → getting, use → using.
At noon I’ll be working.
Errori frequenti
At ten I will be sleep.→ At ten I will be sleeping.Dopo will be il verbo si mette nella forma in -ing.Tomorrow at this time I will working.→ Tomorrow at this time I will be working.Il future continuous si forma con will be.

Il futuro nel passato: was going to#
Formazione
Was o were + going to + forma base è il passato di be going to: was si usa con I, he, she, it e con un nome singolare, were con you, we, they e con un nome plurale. Nella forma negativa not si colloca dopo was o were; nella forma interrogativa was o were si colloca davanti al soggetto.
Uso
- I was going to buy some milk, but I forgot.
- We were going to have a picnic, but it rained.Dovevamo fare un picnic, ma è piovuto.
- We weren’t going to buy anything, but the shoes were on sale.
- Everyone thought the team was going to win.Tutti pensavano che la squadra avrebbe vinto.
Allo stesso modo, would è il passato di will in una frase al passato: I knew you would like it (« sapevo che ti sarebbe piaciuto »).
Il futuro nel passato, che l’italiano esprime con il condizionale passato (« sapevo che ti sarebbe piaciuto », « pensavo che avrebbe vinto »), si traduce con would + forma base o con was going to: I knew you would like it, I thought he was going to win.
Errori frequenti
I am going to email you yesterday.→ I was going to email you yesterday.Un progetto passato si costruisce con was o were. They was going to sell the house.→ They were going to sell the house.
