Verbo + -ing o to: il significato cambia#

Formazione

Dopo agree, promise, refuse, come dopo want, decide e hope, si mette a to + forma base.

  • I avoid going to the supermarket on Saturdays.Evito di andare al supermercato il sabato.
  • Tom suggested having a picnic.Tom ha proposto di fare un picnic.
  • She promised to write every week.Ha promesso di scrivere ogni settimana.
  • Cooking for ten people is hard work.Cucinare per dieci persone è molto faticoso.

Stop, remember, forget, try.

Verbo+ forma in -ing+ to + forma base
stopsmettere di: He stopped smoking.fermarsi per: He stopped to smoke.
rememberricordare di aver fatto: I remember locking the door.ricordarsi di fare: Remember to switch off the lights.
forgetdimenticare un ricordo, soprattutto con never: I’ll never forget meeting her.dimenticarsi di fare: I forgot to lock the door.
tryprovare per vedere se funziona: Try turning it off and on again.cercare di, sforzarsi di: I tried to open the window, but it was stuck.
  • The baby stopped crying when she saw her mother.
  • We stopped to look at the view.Ci siamo fermati a guardare il panorama.
  • Remember to water the plants.Ricordati di innaffiare le piante.
  • I remember swimming in this lake as a child.
  • If you feel stressed, try going for a walk.
  • I tried to call you, but your phone was off.

Errori frequenti

  • I want stop to smoke. → I want to stop smoking.Stop + -ing significa « smettere di ».
  • Don’t forget closing the window. → Don’t forget to close the window.« Dimenticarsi di fare » si dice forget to.
  • She suggested to go to the beach. → She suggested going to the beach.
  • She avoided to answer. → She avoided answering.
  • Swim is my favourite sport. → Swimming is my favourite sport.

Preferire: would rather, prefer#

Formazione

Would rather (’d rather), « preferire », è seguito dalla forma base, senza to; la sua forma negativa è would rather not, e il secondo termine si introduce con than. Prefer è seguito dalla forma in -ing o da to + forma base; il secondo termine si introduce con to. Would prefer (’d prefer) è seguito da to + forma base.

Uso

Would rather e would prefer esprimono una preferenza in una situazione precisa (« preferirei »); prefer esprime un gusto generale (« preferisco »).

  • I’d rather go by train.Preferirei andare in treno.
  • I’d rather cook at home than eat out.Preferirei cucinare a casa piuttosto che mangiare fuori.
  • Would you rather have tea or coffee?Preferisci un tè o un caffè?
  • She’d rather not talk about it.Preferisce non parlarne.
  • I prefer reading to watching TV.Preferisco leggere piuttosto che guardare la TV.
  • We’d prefer to leave early.Preferiremmo partire presto.

prefernome, -ing o to + forma baseto + nome o -ingI prefer rice to pasta. I prefer walking to driving.
would prefernome o to + forma baserather than + forma baseI’d prefer to walk.

Si trova anche would sooner, con lo stesso significato di would rather.

Differenza con l’italiano

« Preferire A a B » si dice prefer A to B, come in italiano, e non prefer A than B; « piuttosto che » si traduce con than solo dopo would rather. Dopo would rather il verbo si mette alla forma base: « preferirei partire » → I’d rather go, e non I’d rather to go.

Errori frequenti

  • I’d rather to sit by the window. → I’d rather sit by the window.
  • She prefers dogs than cats. → She prefers dogs to cats.
  • I wouldn’t rather go. → I’d rather not go.La negazione si colloca dopo rather.

Vedere, sentire qualcuno fare: see, hear#

Formazione

Dopo see, hear, watch o notice + persona o cosa, il verbo si mette alla forma base o alla forma in -ing, senza to.

Uso

Dopo can o could si usa la forma in -ing.

  • I saw him get into a taxi.L’ho visto salire su un taxi.
  • We heard the door close.Abbiamo sentito chiudersi la porta.
  • I saw two boys playing football in the street.
  • I can hear someone singing.Sento qualcuno che canta.

I heard him play the piano significa che si è ascoltato il brano intero; I heard him playing the piano, che lo si è sentito per un momento, mentre suonava.

Differenza con l’italiano

L’italiano dice « l’ho visto partire » con l’infinito; l’inglese usa la forma base, senza to, o la forma in -ing: I saw him leave, I saw him leaving.

Errori frequenti

  • I saw her to leave. → I saw her leave.
  • We heard them arrived. → We heard them arrive.

I phrasal verbs#

Formazione

Un phrasal verb (verbo frasale) è formato da un verbo seguito da una particella avverbiale (on, off, up), da una preposizione (after, for) o da entrambe (forward to).

TipoComplemento nomeComplemento pronome
verbo + particellaturn the radio off o turn off the radioturn it off
verbo + preposizionelook after the childrenlook after them
verbo + particella + preposizionelook forward to the holidayslook forward to it

Uso

Con un verbo + particella (turn on, put on, try on, pick up), il complemento nome si colloca prima o dopo la particella, ma il pronome complemento si colloca tra il verbo e la particella. Con un verbo + preposizione (look after, look for), il complemento segue la preposizione. Il significato di un phrasal verb si impara insieme al verbo: look after significa « badare a », « occuparsi di »; look forward to, « non vedere l’ora di ».

  • It’s dark. Can you turn on the light?È buio. Puoi accendere la luce?
  • This music is too loud. Can you turn it down?Questa musica è troppo alta. Puoi abbassarla?
  • My grandmother looks after my son on Mondays.Mia nonna bada a mio figlio il lunedì.
  • We’re looking forward to visiting Scotland.

L’italiano usa spesso un verbo semplice dove l’inglese usa un phrasal verb: « accendere » → turn on, « spegnere » → turn off, « abbassare » → turn down, « raccogliere » → pick up, « provare » (un vestito) → try on.

Errori frequenti

  • Turn off it, please. → Turn it off, please.
  • We’re looking forward to go on holiday. → We’re looking forward to going on holiday.Dopo look forward to si usa la forma in -ing.
