Il discorso indiretto riferisce le parole di qualcuno senza citarle: She said she was hungry (« Ha detto che aveva fame »).
Formazione
Un’affermazione si riferisce con say o tell, seguiti da una proposizione introdotta o no da that: He said (that) he was hungry. He told me he was hungry. He said to me he was hungry.
| say | tell |
|---|---|
| say hello, say goodbye, say sorry | tell me, tell Anna, tell the children |
| say something, say a word | tell the truth, tell a lie, tell a story, tell a joke |
| Parole | Discorso indiretto |
|---|---|
| present simple: “I work in a bank.” | past simple: She said she worked in a bank. |
| present continuous: “I’m leaving.” | past continuous: He said he was leaving. |
| present perfect: “I’ve finished.” | past perfect: She said she had finished. |
| past simple: “I saw it.” | past perfect o past simple: He said he had seen it. / He said he saw it. |
| will, can: “I’ll call.” “I can ski.” | would, could: She said she would call. He said he could ski. |
| am going to | was going to |
| have to, must (obbligo) | had to |
I pronomi, il tempo e il luogo. I pronomi e gli aggettivi possessivi cambiano secondo chi riferisce: “My bag is heavy” → Lucy said her bag was heavy. Se le parole si riferiscono più tardi o in un altro luogo, cambiano anche le espressioni di tempo e di luogo: today → that day, tomorrow → the next day o the following day, yesterday → the day before, ago → before o earlier, now → then, here → there.
- “I’m hungry.” → Tom said he was hungry.« Ho fame. » → Tom ha detto che aveva fame.
- “I’ll send you the photos tomorrow.” → She told me she would send me the photos the next day.« Ti manderò le foto domani.
- “We’ve lost our tickets.” → They said they had lost their tickets.« Abbiamo perso i biglietti. » → Hanno detto che avevano perso i biglietti.
Ciò che resta vero. Il tempo non si sposta quando il verbo che introduce il discorso è al presente (says) o al present perfect (has said): Anna says she’s coming. Dopo said o told, un’informazione ancora vera nel momento in cui si parla può restare al presente, ma anche lo spostamento è corretto: He told me he lives in York o he lived in York. Quando la situazione è passata, il tempo si sposta: Last week she said she was ill, e non is ill.
Differenza con l’italiano
« Dire » corrisponde a due verbi inglesi. Con la persona a cui si parla (« mi ha detto », « ha detto ad Anna ») si usa tell: He told me, He told Anna; He said me è scorretto. Senza questa persona si usa say: He said that… « Dire la verità » e « dire una bugia » si costruiscono con tell, come « raccontare una storia » o « raccontare una barzelletta »: tell the truth, tell a lie, tell a joke. Il « che » italiano non si omette mai; that si omette spesso in inglese: She said she was tired. Il futuro nel passato si esprime in italiano con il condizionale passato (« ha detto che sarebbe venuta »), in inglese con would + forma base: She said she would come, e non she would have come. « Ha detto che abitava lì da un anno » si traduce con il past perfect: He said he had lived there for a year.
Errori frequenti
She said me that she was ill.→ She told me that she was ill. / She said that she was ill.Tell è seguito dalla persona; say no.He told that he was tired.→ He said that he was tired. / He told me that he was tired. She said she will come.→ She said she would come.Dopo said, will diventa would. She said she would have come.→ She said she would come.« Sarebbe venuta », futuro nel passato, si traduce con would + forma base.He said the truth.→ He told the truth.

Formazione
Una domanda riferita si costruisce come un’affermazione: il soggetto si colloca davanti al verbo, senza do, does né did, e la frase termina con il punto. Una domanda chiusa (a cui si risponde sì o no) si riferisce con if o whether; una domanda aperta, con la sua parola interrogativa. Una richiesta o un ordine si riferisce con asked o told, la persona e poi to + forma base; nella forma negativa not si colloca davanti a to.
| Parole | Discorso indiretto |
|---|---|
| “Are you tired?” | She asked me if I was tired. |
| “Can you swim?” | He asked whether I could swim. |
| “Where do you work?” | She asked me where I worked. |
| “What time does the shop close?” | He asked what time the shop closed. |
| “Please sit down.” | She asked us to sit down. |
| “Close the door!” | She told me to close the door. |
| “Don’t touch it.” | He told me not to touch it. |
Uso
- “Do you like football?” → She asked me if I liked football.« Ti piace il calcio?
- “Where is the nearest chemist’s?” → He asked me where the nearest chemist’s was.« Dov’è la farmacia più vicina?
- “Can you open the window?” → She asked me to open the window.« Puoi aprire la finestra? » → Mi ha chiesto di aprire la finestra.
- “Don’t open the door.” → My father told me not to open the door.« Non aprire la porta.
In inglese il soggetto si colloca davanti al verbo, all’indicativo: He asked me where the nearest chemist’s was, e non where was the nearest chemist’s. In inglese la persona segue il verbo, seguita da to + forma base: She asked me to open the window, She told me to wait, mai con say. « Chiedere » corrisponde a ask sia per una domanda sia per una richiesta.
Errori frequenti
She asked me where did I work.→ She asked me where I worked.Una domanda riferita si costruisce senza do né did.He asked me if was I tired.→ He asked me if I was tired. She said me to wait.→ She told me to wait. She asked me that I opened the window.→ She asked me to open the window.« Mi ha chiesto di aprire » si costruisce con la persona e to + forma base.He told me don’t move.→ He told me not to move.Nella forma negativa not si colloca davanti a to.
