Formation

An ordinal is formed by adding -de to the number up to negentien, and -ste from twintig on: tweede, vierde, vijfde, tiende, twaalfde, negentiende; twintigste, eenentwintigste. Eerste and derde are irregular, and acht takes -ste: achtste. An ordinal before a noun follows the article: de eerste dag, het tweede huis.
