Polish has two futures. The future of an imperfective verb is compound, built with the future of być: będę czytać (“I’ll read, I’ll be reading”). The future of a perfective verb is one word, with the endings of the present: przeczytam (“I’ll read it”). English will has no word of its own.

The future tense: compound and simple#

Formation

The compound future of an imperfective verb is formed with będę, będziesz, będzie, będziemy, będziecie, będą followed by the infinitive (będę czytać) or by the past form in -ł (będę czytał, będę czytała). The simple future of a perfective verb is its conjugated form, with the endings of the present: przeczytam, przeczytasz, przeczyta.

Imperfective (czytać)Perfective (przeczytać)
jabędę czytaćprzeczytam
tybędziesz czytaćprzeczytasz
on, ona, onobędzie czytaćprzeczyta
mybędziemy czytaćprzeczytamy
wybędziecie czytaćprzeczytacie
oni, onebędą czytaćprzeczytają

Use

The compound future is used for an action that will go on or be repeated: Jutro będę cały dzień pisać. The simple future is used for one action that will be done and finished: Jutro napiszę list. Both express plans, with a time word: jutro, wieczorem, w sobotę, w lipcu, za tydzień. The forms are explained in The compound future: będę + infinitive and The simple future of perfective verbs: zrobię, pójdę, wezmę. The weather in the future is będzie + adverb: będzie zimno, będzie padać.

  • W sobotę będę sprzątać mieszkanie. On Saturday I’ll be cleaning the flat.
  • W sobotę posprzątam kuchnię.On Saturday I’ll clean the kitchen.
  • Co będziesz robić w weekend? What will you do at the weekend?
  • Jutro będzie ciepło.It will be warm tomorrow.

Difference from English

In English every future is formed with will or going to; in Polish the form of the future depends on the aspect of the verb: będę pisać (imperfective) or napiszę (perfective).

Common mistakes

  • Będę zrobić to jutro. → Zrobię to jutro.Będę is not followed by a perfective verb.
  • Jutro będzie ciepły. → Jutro będzie ciepło.The weather is given with będzie and an adverb.

The compound future: będę + infinitive#

Formation

The future of być is będę, będziesz, będzie, będziemy, będziecie, będą. It is used alone (“will be”) and as the auxiliary of the compound future, followed by the infinitive of an imperfective verb: będę pracować, będzie gotować. The past form in -ł may replace the infinitive, and then it agrees with the subject: Ewa będzie czytała, Marek będzie czytał, dzieci będą pływały. Móc and musieć take only the -ł form: będę mógł, będę mogła, będzie musiał.

Use

Będę alone is “I will be”: with a place (jutro będę w domu), an adjective (będę zmęczona) or a noun in the instrumental (będzie lekarzem). Będę with an infinitive is the future of an action that will go on or be repeated.

  • Jutro będę w Warszawie.I’ll be in Warsaw tomorrow.
  • Wieczorem będziemy oglądać film.In the evening we’ll watch a film.
  • Ola będzie musiała wstać wcześnie.Ola will have to get up early.
  • W wakacje będę dużo pływać.I’ll swim a lot during the holidays.

Difference from English

English “will be” is two words, Polish będę one; English “will work” is będę pracować, with the infinitive, not the conjugated verb.

Common mistakes

  • Będę pracuję jutro. → Będę pracować jutro. After będę, the verb is in the infinitive.
  • Anna będzie czytał. → Anna będzie czytała.The -ł form agrees with the subject.

The simple future of perfective verbs: zrobię, pójdę, wezmę#

Formation

A perfective verb takes the endings of the present, and its conjugated form refers to the future: zrobić → zrobię, zrobisz, zrobi; napisać → napiszę, napiszesz, napisze; kupić → kupię, kupisz, kupi; przeczytać → przeczytam, przeczytasz. Some common perfectives have a changed stem:

Use

The simple future expresses one action that will be done and finished, often a plan or a promise: Zadzwonię jutro, W sobotę pojedziemy do Krakowa. No będę is added to a perfective verb.

  • Po pracy pójdę do sklepu. After work I’ll go to the shop.
  • Wezmę tę niebieską koszulę.I’ll take this blue shirt.
  • Jutro kupimy bilety na pociąg.We’ll buy the train tickets tomorrow.
  • Kiedy zaczniesz nową pracę?When will you start your new job?

Difference from English

English “I buy” is a present; Polish kupię is a future, “I’ll buy”, because kupić is perfective. The present of the pair is kupuję.

Common mistakes

  • Będę kupię chleb. → Kupię chleb. The future of a perfective verb is one word.
  • Jutro wziąłem taksówkę. → Jutro wezmę taksówkę.The future of wziąć is wezmę.
